I know using livejournal as grounds for political debate is so 2004, but can anyone tell me the point of making English America's official language? What would it change for the better? How would it really affect our lives?

My vote: Thinly veiled racism

There is no point, I love mexico, and mexicans, and to decide now, 200+ years into existence that we need a natioal language is bullshit. or should i say bushshit. for real.

I have not even known about this discussion until now, but....why is it racism to make English the official language? English effectively is the official language. I mean, the whole administration and legal system works in English, every damn road sign in the US is in written words. Making it the official language sounds like a mere formality to me.

But, as I said, I don't know any more about the discussion than what I just read here....
