In Halberstam’s judgment, McNamara “did not serve himself or his country well. He was, there is no kinder or gentler word for it, a fool.”

An interesting man, and the obituary was pretty thorough.

Do I think Robert Strange McNamera was supid? No.

Do I think he was a fool? Hell yes.

He was the type of fool who believed his own intelligence knew no limits.
