What started as a Bush administration aberration becomes an important part of executive power. It's mission creep at its finest. Once Americans are fully comfortable with their government doing this on a regular basis, a few more liberties will be curtailed, all for security of course. Then a few more, until indefinite detention without trial is a normal part of the justice system and a more permanent solution to the the temporary nature of Sedition Acts has been found.
Enemy combatants have been held in this manner since before the Customary Laws of Warfare were formalized.
The new twist is that a Non Governmental Organization (or several, depending on your point of view) have arrogated unto themselves the prerogatives of a nation state, and are waging war against nation states.
Their calculation was that the Western nations would treat this as a matter of law enforcement vice warfare. Treating the was as a war is quite suboptimal for the NGO's.
Bummer for them.
Good for the Republic in particular and Western Civilization in general.
Frankly, I find it unsettling that your country is willing to hold individuals indefinitely (including one Canadian citizen) solely on the accusation of terrorism, often based on secret evidence. It's too much power to grant an authority. Way too much.
And it's not good for the Republic or Western Civilization, both of which have long traditions of individual rights and rule of law. Besides, terrorism is hardly a threat to either, unlike Fascism or Communism.
You and your country are of course free to treat these wolves upon two legs as you see fit. Have fun keeping the barbarians outside your gates. Write and let us know how it worked out for you.
