"Nicholas, wait a minute, son..."

Nicholas didn't slow his stride in the least. If anything the sound of his grandfather's voice encouraged him to walk at a faster clip.

He was inside the elevator with the doors closing when the tip of an expensive cane wedged its way between the doors causing them to rebound open.

"Nicholas William Sawyer! You do not walk away from me when I'm speaking to you. Ever."

And in the space of a single sentence Nick feels like he's four years old again. "Grandpa, I told you before I didn't want you or Dad pulling strings for me. What kind of doctor am I if I can't get hired on my own merit?" It takes everything in him not to fold his arms like the petulant kid he's sure he resembles.

Will Sawyer crossed throug the elevator doors and pressed the button for the main floor. "You'd be a smart doctor. Now look, I didn't get you that job offer. That came from the hospital board themselves. Not me. You can ask, I even reccused myself from the vote." His cane thumped heavily. "Did I ask them to put your name in for consideration? You bet ya' I did. You're a good doctor. Top of your class all the way through. You're smart and you're dedicated. This hospital would be damned lucky to have you."

"But it's not what I want. I can do more good at the Wayne Clinic than I can sitting behind a desk here seeing three, maybe four patients a day, writing referrals and golfing three days a week." Nick shook his head, his grumpy mood sliding away. The truth was, his grandfather was just trying to help and he needed to be adult enough about it to accept the help in the spirit it was offered. "I appreciate you trying to get me in here Grandpa. I do. But I'm happy at the clinic. I feel like I'm needed there." He gives a half smile. "Besides, you've seen my golf game. It's hopeless."

There's a rueful chuckle and a not so soft pat on the cheek. "You're a fool and an idealist. Just like your father was. You think you can change the world. Alright then. I won't push you anymore Nicky. Just so long as you know when you're sick of patching up thugs and drugs addicts you just have to say the word and I'll make a few calls for you."

"I know Grandpa. I know." And he does. But he also knows he's never going to 'say the word'.
