Some Differences Between Fiction and Reality

1) Love at First Sight: in film and romance novels, this is not only real, but arguably the only 'true' kind of love. IRL, interest can be instantaneous, infatuation can come with a conversation or a long walk, and a deep fondness can happen in a weekend, but love is not a one-time-then-forever thing. This post is win, wow. Especially #2, which I suppose you've deduced is an issue I keep circling.

Reading it, I was reminded of one thing: Fiction has to make sense. There are things that have happened to me in real life that would challenge any reader's suspension of disbelief. But everything in a story has to be there for a reason (ideally, every scene serves more than one purpose), and can't afford to strain credulity too much. Real life is not so discriminating.

On a thread not long ago, I was reminded that, whether we believe in fate or not, whatever we write is fated, by its very nature of being a story. This made me think of the odd and seemingly incompatible differences between fiction (what we wish for, perhaps) and reality. I think we do what we can to bring the good parts of our fiction or fantasies into real life, but even that has unforeseen consequences.
