I remember reading Elizabeth Moon in high school and being transported to cool worlds. Now I feel like I need a shower.

I did say high school. At the time, I also began the Wheel of Time, thinking that Tolkien had been reincarnated. Pity me.

Ouch. I've never read her, but I sort of have a fear of being betrayed by favorite authors.

I tried to ignore authors' personal views (Harlan Ellison was never quiet about his, and Orson Scott Card isn't as radical as some think) until Anne Rice "revealed" what readers of her later vampire novels already suspected. I've since looked more closely at what messages authors might put into their work, consciously or not, like Tolkien's suspicious views on race.
