Here's the deal. Globabl warming is happening, but to what degree and is it worth panicing over? Probably not. Our true effect is not actually known since our data isn't that good. If you look at the sheer number of reports, research and conflicting conclusions scientists are coming up with all the time, it's very, very hard to get a cohesive picture.

Ice core samples don't really tell us that much since CO2 isn't the only chemical we're concerned with. Thirty years ago everyone was all uppity about global cooling. We thought we were running into an ice age.

Here's the real deal: our data isn't that good and although the general temperature trend is going up we don't know much. The earth has it's own natural heating and cooling cycles that we can't even begin to comprehend since we've been on this planet for such a short time. Most of the current panic is completely politicized. So why doing your part by reducing your environmental footprint is always a good thing, there is very little reason for alarm.

Don't buy the hype.

Even if it isn't that big a deal, I think it's better to be safe than sorry. The steps I take to combat global warming are not anything that I think to be otherwise detrimental to the environment and/or human society, so I figure, why not?

I'm not arguing against taking safe steps. I didn't say we shouldn't. I'm saying don't believe they hype, do the research, and be rational about it.

As an educated person I think it's dumb to be doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. Not that it's bad to be doing the right thing in principle, but why be ignorant?
