History:
Good wiki entry on him! Personality: Moses is incredibly easy to read personality-wise and, despite his rough and wild nature, is a good person at heart. When we first meet him, however, he seems like nothing more than a petty bandit with few scruples. If he has a goal, he will reach it at any cost, even if it involves kidnapping or bringing harm to an injured rare beast. Within the first few moments of the game, he single-handedly manages to make an enemy out of Senel, Shirley, Will, Chloe and a whole army led by Melanie, one of Vaclav's Terrors.
This behaviour has roots all the way back to when he was a child and lived among beast tamers. After meeting a grand galf, the king of all galves, he was determined to tame it despite it being young and inexperienced itself. His recklessness cost him his left eye but it also earned him one of the most dependable creatures he would ever have the honour of calling "family". Even though the galf, Giet, also eventually caused his exile from the beast tamers, he never once strayed from the galf's side.
As you can probably guess, family is one of the most important things to Moses. He considered Giet his family and, once he was exiled and arrived on the Legacy, he and his best friend Csaba created a small army of loyal bandits. To be part of Moses' family isn't something to be taken lightly and he doesn't react well to the idea of someone he calls his family betraying him. Likewise, it's hard for him to admit that someone he holds so dear could possibly wish him or others any harm, pushing it to the back of his mind until it becomes impossible to ignore. Still, he doesn't require everything to be perfect in his family as evidenced by how he doesn't disown Jay and Norma despite being the butt of many of their jokes. It's clear he knows that family will fight amongst themselves but, in the end, they help one another out when they need it.
Moses is almost always very upbeat and is quite charismatic. He does his best to keep on the positive side and it's highly unlikely anyone would ever see a time when he would lay down and give up. Of course, he can end up being a little too enthusiastic, charging head first into a place without thinking and inevitably getting into trouble. This can work in his (and his friends') favour when he delegates himself to becoming the cheering squad for the team. While he, much like Norma, can be told that it's not the time to be so careless about things, it doesn't dampen his spirit. It takes a lot to make him take things seriously and it can be a bit jarring for those who aren't used to seeing him that way. He doesn't let things get to him for too long and he has the most uncanny ability to bounce back from things that might knock most people off their feet.
It almost goes without saying that he's quite easy to rile. His tendency to rush headlong into things and his desire to protect his family only exacerbates the problem. Even the slightest insult is usually enough to get him going though, to be fair, it's unlikely that a cheap shot would be enough to make him want to skewer someone. A threat to one he considers family is one easy way to ensure you get on his bad side and it becomes very difficult to restrain him in that case. He can be a hindrance rather than a help even if he doesn't quite see it that way.
He isn't exactly too bright which isn't exactly a surprise. While Moses doesn't exactly like direct insults to his intelligence, he knows that he has limits to how much he knows. He will usually defer to Will or the group when it comes to explaining some of the more complicated situations. Both Jay and Norma tend to be the ones to point out that he knows far less than anyone else. This leads to many squabbles usually ending when Will or Senel call for some seriousness depending on the situation. His intelligence isn't entirely a lost cause, however, as he can read and write (the latter coming as a surprise to Will) which is more than people would expect from him.
Strengths:
Physical:
Moses lost his left eye at a very young age which helped in allowing him to get used to doing everything without both eyes. His weapon of choice is the throwing spear, using his right hand to throw it with deadly accuracy. His patched eye is not a hindrance in his normal life and he doesn't make a big deal out of it. Senel and the others didn't even know he'd lost his eye until it was uncovered by a Mist-infected Giet while at the crags. Not once does Moses ever mention a blind spot (though it's clear he would have one) and, even when his patch is removed, he doesn't fish for sympathy.
Mental:
Right from the beginning, anyone can see that Moses doesn't give up. He tries to find a way to get out of scrapes or get what he wants any way he can. His kidnapping of Shirley was because he thought he could get sacred eres from the Merines. The only reason he boarded the Legacy at all was to find the sacred eres, becoming more powerful than anyone else in the world. Once Moses has a goal in mind, it's very difficult to get him to focus on anything else but that goal - which, to be honest, can be a problem as well as an asset. This is a trait he's had even as a child when he sought out to tame the King Galf he'd seen near his home. He was relentless in his desire to earn the creature's trust and eventually succeeded even though it cost him his left eye.
Emotional:
Moses is loyal to those who end up earning his trust. He has the ability to turn someone he could consider an enemy into a good friend as he did with Senel, Chloe, Norma, Will, Shirley and Jay. While he was eager to settle the "score" with Senel over the capture of Shirley, once he joined the group, he worked at getting along with them rather than continuing to be antagonistic. When someone he cares for is in trouble, he will do anything to help them, even to the point of throwing himself into danger. When he believed that Cashel had slaughtered his group of bandits, he very nearly threw himself upon Cashel to try and avenge their deaths. Were it not for Will, he would have fought to the death for those he considered his family.
That said, family is one of the most important things to him. Moses calls his group of bandits "his boys" and he trusts them with his life. Even though he makes a quick enemy out of Senel and Shirley, he eventually turns this around to consider them part of his family. This goes hand-in-hand with his loyalty and those he considers family have his devotion. It's unknown what he would be like should this trust be betrayed but it's relatively safe to say that purposeful betrayal (Shirley going to war against the land-dwellers doesn't count here - he knew she was under someone's control) would more than likely earn his wrath.
Weaknesses:
Physical:
While this is a strength, it is also, obviously, a weakness. Without his left eye, Moses is slightly handicapped and is left with a blind side. He has done a lot to overcome the problems he faces with this handicap, to the point where most people would never even believe he wasn't handicapped. When it first happened, he attempted to defend himself only to find that he couldn't throw his spear with any accuracy at all. While he isn't exactly weakened with this, it's very safe to say that he would be vulnerable on his blind side.
Mental:
This is actually the silliest weakness but Moses is actually afraid of loud noises. He was forced to admit it when the group was trapped in the Quiet Lands and they went to the Thunder Monument. Norma attempted to set up Chloe to be the one to hug Senel when the thunder and lightning struck but it was Moses who clung to his friend. It's an unusual weakness for him to have but...there you go. |D
Of course, his other weakness is that Moses is a little inept in the brain department. He doesn't exactly enjoy admitting it and will fight people who point it out directly, usually Jay and Norma. Fortunately for everyone, he won't go beyond his means and will defer to the others in the group if an important decision needs to be made or a complex plan needs to be formulated. When it comes to beast taming, Moses is extremely knowledgeable but there's little else he can claim that he excels at.
Emotional:
Moses is extremely hot-headed and a simple word can be all it takes to get him riled up. An insult isn't enough to make him want to hurt someone though it doesn't stop him from threatening to cause bodily harm. Those who threaten anyone who has the title of "family" in his world are a different story. As was demonstrated when he thought that his group of bandits had been slain, Moses becomes almost impossible to hold back. This tends to make him a hindrance if someone is looking to be calm about situations. He doesn't try to get in people's ways with his need to get revenge or simply get after someone but he is a stupid bandit. He can't help it.
Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)
First Person:
[There's a faint rustle and a slight grunt then the sound of someone sitting up. A small hiss of pain is all that you get to tell you that it's not just an animal on the other end. Any audio is barely audible until an indignant growl comes out loud and clear.]
What the hell? Who thought it'd be funny to knock me out and stick somethin' on my back? [He pauses again before sighing heavily then clearly getting to his feet.]
Jay, if this is somethin' you did, I'm gonna find you and do somethin' horrible to you. If this is supposed to be a joke, I ain't laughin'. Bubbles, that goes double for you! Csaba, boys? C'mon, one of you has gotta be here! [Silence. Nothing but silence.] Giet? Nah, he'd never do somethin' like this. It's gotta be Jay or Bubbles, maybe one of my boys decided to have a bit of fun.
[Another pause and the sound of someone walking around, stopping as he reaches the journal, picking it up so his voice sounds closer.] Someone drop the journal we were keepin'? This thing don't look like any book I've ever seen. Sure not the journal we've been keepin'. [He mutters something completely inappropriate for kids under his breath.] This is just great. Pants are gone, I've got somethin' growin' out of my back and my damn spears are missin'! If you're lookin' to piss me off, you've got it!
[He holds the journal loosely, fingers keeping the book open, as he starts walking in one direction for a moment then stops.] I've gotta feelin' that this ain't the Legacy...
Third Person:
It was hard to tell what woke Moses up first: the pain or the drafty clothing he was now wearing. Whatever it was, his eyes fluttered open, seeing trees all around him. That certainly wasn't unusual; he was used to being around trees and he wasn't going to complain if this was somewhere new that he and his boys could build a new hideout. Something does bother him and he grunts as he sits up. Pushing the pain to the back of his mind, he reaches behind him, feeling the soft feathers of his new wings. Once his fingers touch them, he lets out a hiss of pain then pulls away, letting his arms drop loosely beside him. He starts muttering to himself about how odd the situation is before he gets to his feet.
He calls out, not wanting to admit that he wants someone to answer and admit that this is a stupid joke. While he threatens bodily harm to two people he considers close friends, he knows they won't take it to heart. Or, at least, he hopes they won't. Jay was tricky, still hard to read even after knowing each other for so long. Norma and his group of bandits were much easier to understand and he knew none of them would do something to bring him harm.
With his mind racing, Moses calls out for his old companion. Even if the place doesn't look like the Quiet Lands, he knows he has to try. There's no answering howl, no sound of paws beating the ground to race to his side. Nothing but silence aside from the birds calling out to one another in the trees and the faint sounds of small animals ferreting around in the undergrowth.
This gets to him and he starts to walk around, the fact that he's moving making him feel slightly better. He looks down as he walks and stops when he spots the journal, picking it up to observe it. Muttered words tumble from his lips without a second thought, making him irritable once more.
"This is just great. Pants are gone, I've got somethin' growin' out of my back and my damn spears are missin'! If you're lookin' to piss me off, you've got it!" he calls out, knowing he won't get an answer by now.
Resigning himself to fate, he holds the journal loosely at his side, keeping a finger in between the pages and keeping it open. He picks a direction and begins walking, hoping to find something that might tell him where he is. Part of him hopes that he will find whoever did this to him and he'll give them a reason to not do this again.
He doesn't go far before he stops, seeing what is unmistakably a collection of houses. A village that isn't Werites Beacon? Worry trickles down his spine like an icy finger going down his back and causing him to shiver involuntarily.
"I've gotta feelin' this ain't the Legacy," he whispers.
