  • 05:15 I have come to the realization that my husband will never be romantic, even after hitting him repeatedly with a clue by four.

Some of us, especially in the engineer mold, simply don't understand romance and spontaneity... Have a chat with Carrie sometime... She'll feel your pain. I think the recommendation will probably be something along the lines of "Get a boyfriend. They are much better at it than husbands." We are a dense and stupid lot, we husbands.

For a short time, I forgot that Roger is an engineer. Once I put things in terms he could understand, things improved. I had to point out what my problem was and then what the solution looked like. Then we sat down and figured out what came in between and how much time it would take for us to get to the end. After an hour, I made the comment "I can't believe we just fixed a marriage problem with a kinematic equation." His reply "That's why I love you."

While I am not quite so engineer-y as Roger, it is still my general approach, however, Carrie doesn't understand the engineery mindset. Fuzzy problem statements do not lead to solutions.

As I explained to her, she was telling me that the phone system is broken, but couldn't tell me what was working, what specifically it wasn't doing, what she expected it to do, or how she would like it to work in the future. Very difficult for me to diagnose and repair with those symptoms...
