Lost -- the relationship

Feb 15, 2007 15:26

Being a fan of a TV show, movie, book series, whatever is like having a relationship with someone. Sometimes the relationship lasts until you are ready to let go. Sometimes the frustration builds up until you have the break-up from hell. Sometimes you were never that serious to begin with, and then you just laugh and move on. And so on. Anyway, ( Read more... )

I would say that we are quite similar on this. As you say, the philosophy of the writer(s) translates to the hoops they make the characters jump through. Or the way characters view each other. When this changes in unpleasant ways -- it is very like a relationship, where you have to decided if you can deal with the changes. And the real problem is that you can't have a conversation with your partner! And as for the sheer glee, I have that too. But somehow, I keep getting attached to things that have some mix of drama and humor. I tend to reserve the glee for one-shots.

I think I need an interesting concept to coincide with at least one representative of character archytpes to glom onto.

Archetype -- interesting. That's not quite how I would put it, but I need to be able to identify with at least one or two characters, so I think we are kind of saying the same thing. Then we get to feel the torture when said characters are smacked around by the writers ;). The only show that has not caused me to feel this way, at leaast occasionally, has been Six Feet Under. I assume you have seen that show?

Lost started out with an interesting concept, but the creators seem to be running around in circles. It's already worse than the X-files, and it's been less than 3 seasons.

For me if the characters are amazing, then the concept doesn't have to be as great....House is more a character-driven show than a concept-driven one. But the type of characters and the way they solve problems can be said to be a concept in itself, I think.

Your patience amazes me. I purposely didn't watch it, and I am removed enough from it now that I forgot I wasn't planning to watch it until about half way through it--when I was surfing. And then, when I saw Hurley's face, I felt the way I feel when I used to see my ex in the market. Half sad, half happy the agony was over, mostly pleased that I had the strength to walk the fuck away.

::hugs:: whatever got me attached to Lost has been so attenuated that the thread has finally, I think, snapped.

I don't know if it's more patience or the kind of bloody-mindedness that is both a blessing and a curse. Usually it's helpful but sometimes it increases my suffering :).

Well, I think the biggest mistake the show makes is assuming that they can remove the original characters :::coughSayidCough::: and hold our interest. What is fiction, if not an opportunity to identify with characters and follow them through adventures?
