when my dad went to college, he took a break because he wasn't in the college mindset. he did wonderfully when he went back, and all was good. so, i say, if this is something you feel you need to do, do it. in highschool all they ever tell you is that you need to go to college or tradeschool, and they imply that if you don't, you won't ever get a good job. this isn't true. there are apprentenceships and other ways to get a job that you love. so, if you need to take an unconventional path, then that's what you need to do.

My roommate, now a former roommate cause she wanted to move out into the apts, took a year off between highschool and college. I think she's more of an adult for it. So no, its not uncommon or a bad thing to take a year off. :)
