SPN thoughts: What about Sam?

So, I have some thoughts. Sam is attracting a lot of attention and speculation, but is he really getting any episode time?

Apparently, Sam's been replaced by an evil robot. Or he's a Sam-Lucifer hybrid with Sam's crappy lying ability and Lucifer's crappy family values. Or he's got parts missing. Or he's possessed by another angel or an unclassified entity. Or (cool prompt from the Sharp Teeth meme) "Sam" is really Lucifer with amnesia.

Whatever the problem is, Show keeps trying to tell us that he's not Sam right now, and Dean or somebody is going to get to the bottom of it and try to fix it. That would be nice.

But in the mean time, if Sam is not Sam, what is this strange Sam-shaped animal, and why do we care what it does? We like Sam. We like him even if his desire to do good is twisting him into strange shapes and leading him down bloody roads. Unlike in the real world, in the world of cable television, it's the thought that counts. Sam can be a villain and still be Sam, because he's really stubborn, and he believes the ends can justify the means.

If it's not Sam - if it's just a doppelganger hanging around to make Dean miserable - then we're just watching Dean, not Sam&Dean.

I'd feel gipped if whatever is wandering around failing at being Sam was purely alien. If Sam's not getting character development - like maybe, character development of his evil side - Show is just wasting our time and Mr. Padalecki's salary.
