Wow. This impressed me so much right from the start -- I was blown away by your writing, how you set up the hunt and conveyed Sam's angst and resentment at this stage. Man, that whole section when he was writing about the poem. And I didn't read the prompt beforehand, so I was only clued in when I read your author note at the bottom of the second chapter (yeah, I'm slow). Which definitely made it not the story I thought it was going to be.

This story really throws a punch, as captured so well by the title (and how gentle Sam was toward Dean and even John, and just so much rage toward his younger self), and I can't linger on it too long, but. I'm so overwhelmed by your skill.

Maybe I should delete that note. *evil smirk*

The bit with poem was largely inspired by a debate with my mom and brother about that same poem, which we were memorizing because home-schoolers do stuff like that. It turned into an intro to military ethics and strategy and a literary comparison to "Dulce Et Decorum Est," which is the exact opposite of Tennyson's take on war. Sam just got to think all the protesting, idealistic, self-righteous bits.

Sam's relationship with John's memory has improved over the seasons, but with himself . . . who chugs four gallons of conscience-warping drugs and wrestles his way into Hell's sub-basement for all eternity? Seriously, Sam.

Thank-you so much for reviewing. I was concerned about the homework/research segment.

Gorgeous and glorious, the first longish Supernatural story I've read in a while. Thank you so much for this and for reminding me how much I love these boys...and men.

I think everybody's just hunkering down to work on their BigBangs or something.

Glad you liked it!

Really nicely thought-out. Love John's way of dealing with him.

Sorry for replying to this a month late. I like the different John and Sam dynamics we see in this fandom; Nilchance and Beanside's Of Bastard Saints is a great old one for that.
