Brain patterns do tend to become more fixed as we age. I'd suggest finding your own sort of meditation, something you've already done, and use it as a focus to find that inner peace.
I can't tell you what it is, because only you'll know, I personally settle the brain with a decent puzzle, been doing it since I was a kid and it helped establish the pathways and it still works now.
Keep in mind you have to force yourself to keep at it if it's something new, inertia works on the brain too.
