A writer writes. A ball player, plays ball. An accountant counts. Sometimes we do it because we want to, sometimes it is forced upon us. You do it because it's what you know, what your good at, because you want to stay good at it.

Stephen King also says that a writer writes because he can't NOT write. (Double negative intended)

If and when your daughter should should ask, you should just tell her that you don't always need more of a reason than the result itself.

Truth. Writers write because that is how we express ourselves. It's the filter through which we process everything. It's our most effective way of communicating. Not writing just isn't an option.

And, well, if your daughter asks, tell her what you just told all of us. If she's gotten to the point where she can ask that question, she's gotten to the point where she can appreicate the honesty of the response.

Good luck!
