That was better

Last week's BSG was an improvement. I have to keep tabs on this particular writer, Michael Angeli, because what he did was pretty damn good. First off, Rolo Lampkin. In less competent hands, this character could've been so, so, so very bad - and yet? Angeli keeps him interesting, because you realize up front that this guy isn't what he seems. What has he been doing in the fleet? That they managed to push the idea that he knew and worked for/against Adama's dad and Lee's grandpere, that's a stretch, but still. Great creation. Writers kill to have characters that can come to life so vividly and quickly. And against such an established cast. Wonderful.

Tricia Helfer as Caprica Six. This woman is so much more than another pretty face. I actually think she just stole that episode right out from under everyone. Everything she did was so dialed down, and focused. Loved the little tic she gives Six as Lamkin lies to her, sees her hope as he tells her that Baltar only loves her and worries that she's okay (and not, well, actually focused wholly on Baltar). She does this look, so tiny, she literally refocuses her eyes for a second. It totally sold me.

This is when I love the show. When its on point, alegorical (rather than mythological).

Loved how Lee was seduced by this man - you know he's being set up and that Lee is going to have to betray his value relationships here at some point. Also, and I don't know why this seemed important to me, but I was really touched by the subtle reconciliation between Lee and Sam, that after Kara's death there was no further competition, only that feeling that they both shared in the pain of their loss. Color me sucker, but that man love did it to me.

Then there's the volcano that is EJO. He lost his daughter, and now he's on the verge of losing his one remaining son - or you think. When he comes back into Command and tells the staff that Helo is CAG again and that Apollo "has more important things to do" (isn't there a VP accused of using that excuse to duck military service?) - it's more like Adama has lost the boy his son was and now has to respect the man that he is.

Interesting.
