Of Self-Important Snobs and Bears

While Carol and Burt are on their honeymoon the boys decide to have their significant others over for the night.

In which Rachel and Kurt are competitive, Blaine is amused and Finn doesn't really know what's going on.

It's awkward at the beginning. They're sitting in Kurt's room, Rachel and Finn on his couch, Blaine leaning against the headboard and Kurt on the floor, painting his nails. A mix of nearly every song they've sung in glee club is playing in the background. Defying Gravity starts playing and Kurt hums along, quietly because he knows not everybody wants to hear somebody else singing such a wonderful song.

"So, Rachel, what's your favorite song that you guys have sung?" Blaine chimes and Kurt really wants to punch him. He's told Blaine before about his and Rachel's little solo rivalry. Rachel grins that stupid grin of hers.

"Well, I'd say this one, actually. It was my most gratifying solo," she says, looking pointedly down at Kurt, who's stopped humming and it so focused on painting his nails that he could burn a hole through his hand. "It's a shame you couldn't hit that note, Kurt. The rest was pretty okay. I mean, nothing compared to what I can do, but it was okay. For a guy."

Kurt's nostrils flare. "I flubbed it on purpose, you self-important dolt," he hisses, still focused only on painting his nails.

"It's okay, you don't have to defend yourself. I understand; everybody bites off more than they can chew sometimes. Maybe there's a song from RENT you can do?" Kurt takes a breath and stands.

"Finn, don't you know how to control that stupid horse of yours?" He bites and storms upstairs. Finn and Blaine glance at each other. Blaine's eyebrows are high on his forehead, bemused. Finn shrugs, his beady eyes wide. And Rachel, of course, sees nothing wrong with what she just said.

".. You guys hang tight. I'll be right back," Blaine says, going up the stairs after Kurt. "Kurt?" He says, looking around a bit, he's sitting in the living room staring at the television. "This is my favorite show," he says, sitting down next to him.

"The television isn't on, Blaine," Kurt bites, looking over at him, unamused.

"I know. It was a joke. Come on, relax for me, please?" Blaine pulls Kurt over to him, pressing a kiss to the side of his head. "If she's really just a stupid horse, then there's no point in getting yourself worked up over it, is there?"

"Well.. No, but-" Blaine cuts him off with a finger to the lips.

"Relax, okay? We're gonna go back and we're gonna be just fine," he says, dragging his finger down Kurt's lip before standing.

"Are you doing that thing where you say 'we', but really only mean 'you'?" Kurt says, deadpan as he stands. Blaine grins and starts walking back to the stairs.

"I might be," he hums, shuffling down the steps. Kurt follows wordlessly.

"What took you so long? Did you get tongue tied?" Rachel chimes, and now she's on Finn's lap, her legs crossed. Kurt scoffs.

"No. You see, my boyfriend doesn't only care about sex and making out," he says, sitting down on his bed. Blaine's eyebrow arches as he stretches back out. Rachel smiles.

"At least my boyfriend actually loves me," she says, cocking her head as if saying 'beat that'.

Kurt's blood boils, but he remains calm. "You've been dating for what, two months? Finn's at the age where boys mistake love for lust. You can hardly find him a credible source," he replies, a smirk stretching across his face.

Finn furrows his eyebrows. "Wait, what?" He says, looking between Kurt and Rachel.

Rachel kisses his cheek softly. "Don't worry about it, baby," she says and Kurt rolls his eyes. "Finn knows how to show his emotions, Kurt. Don't be upset because your boyfriend just sees everything as a joke," she bites back. Kurt lets out a small huff; she's getting defensive and therefore more annoying than usual. Kurt crosses his arms and glares at Rachel. How dare she insult Blaine like that?

"Pardon me, ma'am?" Blaine finally speaks up, rolling on his side and looking at her pointedly. "And both of you need to relax. We're here for a friendly get-together, not to bicker the whole time. Come on, Finn, rein in your neigh-winny-winny and let's do something fun," he says. Finn looks at him like he's cross-eyed.

"Do what? To who?" He says, and sometimes Kurt really does marvel at Finn's stupidity. And apparently Blaine does, too. He presses his hand to one of his eyes and sighs.

"Get Rachel to calm down so we can have some fun," he reiterates. Finn mouths an 'oh' and looks to Rachel.

"I'm not doing anything," she says simply, standing up and looking through Kurt's CDs. Kurt and Finn exchange confused looks and shrug. Blaine laughs at them both.

"You guys are already used to this whole brother thing, aren't you?" He hums, wrapping an arm around Kurt's middle and rolling back on to his side, taking the other boy with him. Kurt laughs, laying out next to him.

"I guess we are. I mean.. I dunno. Not much has really changed, now that I think about it. But it is pretty cool to say that I have a brother," he says, looking over at Finn and smiling. Finn returns the smile innocently and Kurt feels bad for thinking it, but he really looks like a kid with a mental disorder. He brushes the thought away and amends it: Finn is very special.

"It is pretty cool," he agrees, leaning back on the couch. Rachel returns to her seat on his lap.

"So what about you, Blaine? Are you an only child?" She articulates. Kurt's starting to hate the sound of her voice even more.

"W-"

"I am," she speaks before he answers. "My dads adopted me. I'm glad they did. I was raised in a family of performers, you know? And my mom is the director of Vocal Adrenaline. I was born to be a star on Broadway, you know," she continues.

"That's ni-"

"And I was born to be a star in general, you know. I get all of the solos in glee club. I'm the only really qualified-"

"Rachel, I think we should talk about som-"

"Be quiet, Finn, I'm talking," she says to him. Kurt just keeps staring at the ceiling, tuning her out. He hadn't noticed that the wall color and the ceiling color were so off in their shades. He thinks he ought to get some paint and fix that, else it'll drive him crazy.

Rachel finally finishes her monologue and Kurt comes back to reality to hear Blaine say to Finn: "At least my boyfriend lets me get a word in, edgewise, huh?" His tone is light, teasing, but nevertheless, Finn just shrugs.

"I like her voice. I don't mind listening to her talk all the time."

Kurt laughs at that. "I honestly think I'd go batty if I had to be with her all the time, Finn."

"I'm sitting right here, you know!" She says. They shut up.

"So... How 'bout them Bears?" Blaine says to clear up the awkward silence. He only succeeds in making it worse.
