Character

Name: Yotsuba Koiwai
Fandom: Yotsuba&!
Gender: Female
Age: 5
Time Period: The morning of the hot air balloon competition
Wing Color: Yellow
History: There are wikis for everything nowadays huh?

Personality:
Yotsuba is an incredibly energetic and curious five year old girl. To say she behaves spontaneously when the mood strikes her would be putting her personality lightly. She's always finding out more and more about the world around her. Despite being five years old, Yotsuba does not some of the simpler facts of life, or simpler... Anything really. She's shown to be clueless about what a doorbell is for, escalators, air conditioning, moving house, and many other things. Even though she doesn't understand many things, once she is told about something, such as how a doorbell works, she's quick to exhibit her new found knowledge. Furthermore, the speed at which she takes on new information can be applied to even more complex topics, such as when Ena tries explaining global warming to Yotsuba. It's hardly something you would expect a five year old to know about in detail. This 'detail' however can vary from being factually correct to being a complete lie as Yotsuba will generally believe anything she is told. Referring back to air conditioning again, despite being told using an A/C would contribute to global warming, causing Yotsuba to panic, once she is told A/C units are used to help cool down the earth she quickly cheers up again.

Yotsuba is highly impressionable and enjoys copying people, animals, TV shows, etc. As she has a like for cicadas, at one point she climbs up a telephone pole and makes 'cicada' noises in order to imitate being a cicada. Additionally, when watch a crime show with her dad and Jumbo, when one of the women on screen is shot, Yotsuba runs off to find a water pistol and soon after 'shoots' her fad and his best friend. She copies everything exactly, even getting the speech down. "Save your excuses for hell."

Whilst most of what Yotsuba says would be typical of a five year old there are also many things she says which are completely nonsensical. Whilst pretending to be a gangster, she mutters 'I promise even if I die... I'll come back alive.' There are also cases where she tries speaking but muddles up her words, or using the wrong phrase in the wrong situation, telling Fuuka 'welcome aboard!' when she comes to visit after saying 'welcome to my bumble home!'. Every so often, Yotsuba will come out with even stranger things to say, such as mentioning the meal she's eating is worthy of a nobel prize. Whether she actually knows what a nobel prize is or if she's just saying things she heard in the past is not clear, though Jumbo does tell Yotsuba at one point not to say things for the sake of saying them.
Whenever Yotsuba does something she has the tendency to declare to the world what she is doing. To hear her say something like 'Yotsuba is running' or 'Yotsuba is going over there' is quite common. She can also be blunt and rude, though never intentionally. Yotsuba often refers to two of her neighbour's daughters as 'the pretty one' and 'the not-so-pretty' one, not to be rude but because one daughter looks prettier when compared to the other and Yotsuba is only making an observation. Also, when first meeting an older woman for the first time, Yotsuba asks 'are you still alive granny?', as earlier Yotsuba was told about flowers and buying flowers for your family altar to honour passed away relatives.

When Yotsuba spots something she likes, be it a cicada, the prospect of getting ice cream, playing in the rain, etc, she will drop whatever she is doing in order to follow said thing she likes. She has a one track mind in that respect. When visiting her neighbour's house for the first time, the second thing Yotsuba says involves her asking for ice cream. There are very few cases where Yotsuba will actually think her actions through before doing something, such as boarding a bus when told she was young enough to ride for free without considering where the bus would stop or what Fuuka would do now she was on the bus. In this sense, Yotsuba has a very happy-go-lucky approach to life.

There are times when Yotsuba is shown to be rather forgetful. At one point, she recalls how her dad once told her never to go with strange people even if they offer you something and say 'they know daddy'. As she is walking with Fuuka at the time, who she isn't familiar with yet, she quickly runs away. On another occasion however, when Yanda first shows up at Yotsuba's house and tries to get inside, Yotsuba is easily distracted by the offer of candy, allowing Yanda to go inside... After Yotsuba slams a door into him. Yotsuba also has 'selective hearing', or she simply mishears things. When she was told they couldn't go to the beach because there are too many jellyfish, Yotsuba thought they would go to the beach to see the jellyfish instead.

Yotsuba isn't the type of person to get depressed or concerned about things. She only tends to cry when she gets in trouble or when she doesn't get her way, and even then it isn't proper sobbing. Rather, Yotsuba will scream over and over again instead. Yotsuba also cries when she is scared, though it's more her shouting 'GYAAAAAAA' than proper crying.

Yotsuba is a clumsy little girl and is quite accident prone, though some of the times she is hurt because of her own doing. One time she rides an escalator by leaning over the bar between two escalators going in opposite directions and ends up banging her head on a pillar. There are also cases when she runs into closed doors and gates in her own excitement. She doesn't seem very bothered by all this however, often commenting bluntly that it hurt and then carrying on with her life. When she falls off her bike and scrapes her arm however, Yotsuba is told to stay strong by her dad and not to cry. When she falls off her bike when her dad isn't around however, Asagi comments that Yotsuba cried when she fell.

Like most children, Yotsuba isn't fond of being told off and will lie in some cases if it means avoiding being told off. When she realises she's done something wrong, Yotsuba often worries about how her dad will react.

Yotsuba enjoys drawing, even though she isn't very good at it. Understandable as she's only five years old, though she likes to think of herself as an expert artist, often commenting on other people's artwork, not being afraid to say how bad it is despite her own poor work. When Miura criticises Yotsuba's drawings, saying they're actually very bad, Yotsuba can't comprehend the criticism she's receiving. It takes her some time to realise Miura was saying she's a poor artist, after which she appears visibly crestfallen. It doesn't take much to convince Yotsuba that she's actually a 'brilliant' artist later on however. As well as drawing, Yotsuba likes to sing and make up her own songs. Nothing complex, but just a few lines often relating to what she's currently doing, such as singing a song about getting cake when she goes to buy cake. Her songs tend to use odd lyrics at times, often throwing in words such as 'whoa' and 'olé', and one time her song about 'life' ended with the line 'and life is PAIN'.

Yotsuba doesn't like greedy goats. She punched one in the face once. It was awesome. When a sheep pushed her down a hill she punched that in the face too... She really doesn't like rude animals. She also likes playing pretend, at one point dressing up as 'flower cupid' and handing out flowers, and another she pretends to be tsuku-tsuku boushi and pretends to end summer. Finally, Yotsuba is easy to trick and is rather gullible. She believes Miura is actually a cardboard robot, Danbo, when she's dressed up in cardboard boxes. Yotsuba then gives Danbo money as 'money is energy' to Danbo.

Strengths:
Physical: Just a super energetic five year old! Playing for too long will tire her out to the point of exhaustion, as shown when Yotsuba is taken to the beach and she insists on staying longer. She eventually just falls asleep on the sand. One thing Yotsuba is exceptionally good at is swimming, shown when Jumbo throws her into the public swimming pool. She even tries to start a swimming class to help her dad, Jumbo and Fuuka learn how to swim. She's also used to getting bangs and bruises as she often finds herself slamming her head into things or just falling over, one such example being when she's given a piggy back ride and she keeps hitting her head on door frames... Just your 'normal' five year old in terms of actual strength!

Mental: She really isn't the brightest crayon in the box and as such doesn't really possess any mental strengths. She's good at applying what she's learnt to new situations, though more often than not Yotsuba would have misunderstood something or wouldn't remember what she was told.

Emotional: What she lacks in mental strength she surely makes up for with emotional strength. When the going gets tough then Yotsuba gets going! At one point, Yotsuba follows Fuuka all the way from home to her high school in order to give Fuuka a glass of milk. Also, despite being an orphan and being adopted by her dad Koiwai, Yotsuba doesn't seem to mind at all. She's perfectly happy being with her dad and not having a mother, possibly because she's never experienced having one. Her dad mentions 'that kid can always find enjoyment in everything... Nothing can ever get Yotsuba down'. When need be, Yotsuba can be a brave little girl, shouting insults and even kicking things that threaten her. When Miura pretended to be a scarecrow she got a good kick in the shin for scaring Yotsuba.

Weaknesses:
Physical: She's a little kid. Yotsuba isn't exactly going to be winning any fist fights or powering up to defeat evil like a shounen superhero... Though she might like to pretend she's a superhero sometimes! She can be injured and become sick like any normal human.

Mental: A very naive little girl who is still learning about the world around her. Many new concepts needs to be explained to Yotsuba, from items to phrases and even simple words like 'no sweat' and 'lovely'. She tends to act without thinking, deciding to go hunting for cicadas without any nets or anything to keep the cicadas in once they're caught. It's very easy to sway Yotsuba into doing things for you, such as by bribing her with something she likes. When Jumbo persuades Yotsuba to invite Asagi to go to Water World with them, her dad comments that Jumbo shouldn't be using Yotsuba 'as bait'. It's easy to outsmart her as Yotsuba typically believes anything she is told.

Emotional: There's very little emotionally weak about Yotsuba, even though she's only five years old. She's happy and all smiles most of the time. One issue Yotsuba has however is being separated from her dad. In the past, her dad told her that if she ever got away from him in a crowd then she would never see him again... So of course throwing her into a world without him might cause a few issues. Oh God now I just feel guilty.

Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)
First Person: Heeey everyone! Didja look outside today? Guess what! Guess whaaaat!! It's been raining! Raaaining! R-a-i-n-i-n-g!! Yotsuba wants to go outside and play, ok? So everyone should come play in the rain and all the puddles. You can jump in 'em and they go splish-splash everywhere! Yotsuba used to play in the puddles all the time with daddy. He didn't like getting splashed though, but then he moved his umbrella and was like 'GAAAAAAAH!' and shouted really loud!! Yotsuba did the same, it was as though Yotsuba was living a new life. Best prize!

If you wanna go out in the rain then you need to wear your galoshes. Otherwise your feet get all wet and it doesn't feel too good when your feet get cold! Brrr!! See, see?! Just the thought of it gave Yotsuba shivers! If you get too cold then you get sick and have to stay inside. But it doesn't rain inside, so you can't have any fun in the puddles that way. Yotsuba would like to remind everyone not to get sick!

Going to play, in the rain! Going to play, in the rain! Splish splash splish splash, whoosh!

Third Person:

Seeing as it's getting colder with winter getting closer, Yotsuba has decided to be an independent little girl and go and find a scarf for herself. Her dad would never let her go to a shop on her own, but Yotsuba thinks she's much too old to need daddy to come with her! After all, she's five years old, what's stopping her?

Walking, or rather marching through the village, Yotsuba heads to the clothing shop to pick up a scarf. Anyone she passes receives and enthusiastic wave and a brief explanation of Yotsuba's plans for the day, even if they didn't ask. "Scarf shopping!"

Pushing open the door to the clothes shop with both hands, Yotsuba steps inside and looks around. There doesn't seem to be any scarves here at all. In fact, it seems like a lot of this stuff is just junk! Yotsuba looks through the piles of items strewn about for scarf. She's not having much luck however. She did find this really nifty net though! She could probably catch lots of cicadas with this... Though this is neither the time nor the place for cicada catching! Sorry net, it just wasn't meant to be.

Still looking, still trying to find a scarf... Oh! Yotsuba eventually finds a long, green looking thing. She's not too sure what it is exactly, but it's long like a scarf and she can wrap it around her neck like one. Taking the long, green thing, she wraps it up and ties it around her neck. The object is a little too long however, so as Yotsuba walks off the rest of her new scarf drags along the floor. It even clatters on the ground a little, which is a little odd for a scarf, but Yotsuba doesn't seem to mind.

Finally returning home, Yotsuba flings the door open and steps inside to show off her new clothing. She's barely two steps through the door when her scarf gets caught under the door and she falls over. Closer inspection reveals her new scarf has an attachment to the end of it, specifically a nozzle. Seems as though Yotsuba ended up going to the item shop and mistook a garden hose for a scarf. Not that she seems bothered. If anything she's happy showing off the garden hose! With a laugh, Yotsuba runs upstairs to show the rest of the house her brand new scarf.
