Angelina paused for a moment to glance over her shoulder, gloved hand resting on the kissing gate, poised to swing it open. It was a cold, bright Christmas, and her gloves stuck and pulled on the frosty metal. Her breath fogged in crystalline puffs, shot through with hard, icy sunshine, as she asked, “Are you sure your mum doesn’t mind us being gone all afternoon?”
The thin crust of snow crunched under George’s boots as he caught up with her. Throwing her a crooked grin and catching her hand, her husband of just over two weeks replied, “She won’t mind.”
