Above the party in Hogsmeade, fireworks shimmer in the sky. Bonfires lick warmth upwards, and the air is alive with a conversational buzz overlain with varying renditions of Auld Lang Syne.
Hermione tilts her face upwards, snugly wrapped in Ron’s arms and a Warming Charm, her lips tingling from a passionate kiss.
He kisses her again and hands her a fizzing flute of champagne. “Happy New Year, love,” he says huskily.
She smiles and tilts her head back to take a long swallow.
She cough-chokes on something hard. “What the hell was that?”
Even Ron’s freckles are pale. “Diamond ring...”
