everyone defines character differently. I think that you've got it where it counts (in my mind). there are plenty of hardworking, driven people who have no personalities, or much worse, who are simply malicious. There are too many of these people in my opinion, but then again, I might be one of them, so I should be careful to complain.

You are a kind, caring person. You might not be willing to stay up all night for a problem set, but you would stay up all night for a friend who needed you. Or even, just needed anyone. I think that's a lot more... honorable than being willing to sacrifice to get yourself along.

And, I am not trying to excuse the bad points. I am just trying to remind you of the good points. Because you have a lot of them

everyone defines character differently.Indeed! I do not limit the definition of Character to the level of Hard Work and Discipline. It is but one aspect of Character. You pointed to this when you wrote of various "points." (This begs the question: What are the other aspects of Character? I must endeavor to discover them and enumerate them within my own mind, rather than depend on intuition to dictate to me what they are ( ... )
