Some of you are aware that I have now decided to go on to graduate school. I found that I really like doing research during my internship this summer at Brookhaven National Lab. I was given the following advice: don't go to a department that doesn't offer you funding, because they don't want you enough. This might be specific to math, but I think it's true in most technical fields. You should by all means seek outside funding (it makes you more attractive to the schools and can give you other opportunities), but be aware that, in general, one is paid to go to grad school. :)
