The Nation Personality: Romano is graced with all the personality of a PMSing woman.
On even a good day, he appears for all the world to be sulking or generally upset about something, when on the inside he may really be neither. A frown is his default expression, whether he’s happy or sad, though a smile may find its way to the surface on the rarest of occasions.
Things that make Romano smile are few and far between and you’ll be wasting hours upon hours of your life trying to find them. And even if you have that knowledge and use it, he may still keep his smile hidden, simply to ruin your fun. There are times when he can say the cruelest things without really meaning them. Other times he’s just too embarrassed to be honest, so a harsh comeback is the easiest way for him to reply and feel in control of the situation.
He has a foul mouth to accompany his sour attitude. His favorite words in all languages are “Bastard”, “Fuck”, and “Asshole”. Even as a little nation, he constantly cursed and berated his caretakers, including Spain, whose nickname ranged from ‘Bastard’ to ‘Jerk’ depending on Romano’s mood. Not much has changed in that regard.
There are quite a few reasons for his bad behavior. Being overshadowed by his younger brother North Italy (who like Romano, has a separate name, Italy Veneziano), has made his entire life something of a competition with him for the attention of others. When his art and trade and other generally good traits paled in comparison to Veneziano’s, he resorted to throwing things, temper tantrums, anything and everything that would pull some attention his way. Even then, though, it was never the attention he desired. Today he is still quick to start trouble out of habit, finding it extremely amusing to do so.
His bad behavior is only pushed along further with influence from the Mafia, even if he and they are not on good terms because of the harm they do to his economy (which pretty much relates directly to his health). He sees the world as a dark place because of the atrocities that happen very close to his heart. His view on the world is very biased: everyone is out to get him, so he has to keep on his emotional and physical defense.
As per the Italian stereotype, he is a coward: he may start fights, but most of the time he will run away from them or trip on his way in; a flirt: normally, he only flirts with pretty women and acts abrasive to men; and a lover of good food and wine: self explanatory.
He’s a bit spoiled and usually expects to get his way if he whines enough, though this doesn’t happen as often as he’d like. He avoids hard labor like the plague and would prefer to be tending to plants or cooking or eating or sleeping. His siesta is serious business and he almost always sleeps naked and alone, though his brother has been known to spend nights sharing the bed with him for whatever reason.
It is important to note that he is still a bit sensitive to hearing his brother referred to as simply 'Italy', as if the speaker refuses to acknowledge that Romano is very much a part of Italy as well. For this reason, he makes a point to call North Italy 'Veneziano', which is more accurate. To be fair, they are both Italy, two parts of a whole. He'd really like for his brother to correct people when they name him incorrectly, but unfortunately, it doesn't happen.
He’s deathly afraid of many things, despite his admirable attempts to seem brave. If he's pushed hard enough, or someone he cares for is in trouble, he may be able to look past his fears and do what needs to be done.
Romano also thinks perverts need to go eat bullets.
Abilities: Nations' health are usually connected to the overall health/status of their people, and because there are innumerous people living at any given moment, they're usually immortal creatures. Other than that, he doesn't really have any extraordinary abilities. The things he can do that are above the norm are speak in a variety of languages (Italian, English, Sicilian, some Spanish, etc) and pickpocket like a pro.
He can use typical weapons like guns or knives, but he has a tendency to be clumsy with them in a stressful situation. In a normal situation, he won't really resort to weapons when his own hands (or head) make much more efficient substitutes.
Lastly, a phenomenon occurs when the strange curl protruding from his head is tugged, causing him to utter a sound like ‘chigi’ and become either extremely angry or extremely, uh, aroused. It's an unfortunately bizarre erogenous zone.
