How the hell does someone burn boiling potatoes?!

Now I have to try and see if any store in this town, that is open, has potatoes left over.

If the pototoes were meant for mashing , you can just scrape the stuff that is'nt burnt an add extra milk.

You know they grow in the ground, too, right? And don't actually get "born" in big boxes that you need only add milk and butter to?
