Friends

I found out what it is that annoys me about most of these sites, including LJ.
Here it comes

You've only made 2 friends.
You've made * only* 2 friends, like it isn't enough somehow. And then it is followed by the message "Make more friends" as if that is what friendship is. Just add a few names to a list and bam you are popular, never mind if you've ( Read more... )

Haha, yes I know what you mean. The worst is still facebook where they actively suggest "new friends" with a widget called "People you may know," aka people your current "friends" have added. I hesitate to call them "friends" too, because I use a site like facebook for networking and friend anyone who isn't a creep, basically.

LJ is still a source of humongous drama because if you "un-friend" someone on it, it's like cutting off their friendship. So weird to think about, that friendship and relationships must be "validated" by online social networking sites.

My favourite "friends" function is still the one at HOL. I tend to get randomly friended by Twilight fans with whom I've had no interaction.

What amuses me the most is when I get notification, as has happened a couple of times, that they removed me as their friend just a day or two later... presumably when they read my Profile :#

Well, it seems that you are getting popular. I just checked, I'm now your FOURTH friend!

I agree that the 'friending' abilities can be rather daunting. I don't understand why people feel the need to add so many friends. My brother for example, has more than 200 friends on his MSN, and over 500 on his FB. I've asked him, and he doesn't even recognise half of those names. So what's the point of having them there? Why categorise people like that, if they're not even acquaintances. Seems like a waste of precious resources to me.

Regardless... you are now one step closer to LJ popularity! I wonder if it will stop suggesting that you make more friends once you reach a certain threshold.

Indeed, four whole friends. Well I was happy with two friends, and now I am happy with my four friends, especially since you are four people that I love talking to.

I am happy with my four friends!

I'm not sure how many I have on here and I don't really care. :D I like using LJ to post homework and stuff from HOL and the occasional rant about my life. But even then I don't use this as much as I should. Though I am trying to if only to have something to type to keep my speed up. :D

As for other places, on FB I have a lot of friends and use the groups setting to try and keep them straight. I have all my hol buddies in one and family and people from school. If I didn't I wouldn't recognize people either. My dad has a large family, one of my aunts has 18 kids and most I have never met but found on fb. A nifty way to chat with relatives I never would have talked to.

But my msn is much much smaller. it only has people I have actually talked to on there. And only a few HOL people. I love my msn for keeping in touch with my dad. It is one of the few things he can do with out too much trouble. But links are still hard for him to open with out opening 10 or 20 of them.
