I found out what it is that annoys me about most of these sites, including LJ.
Here it comes
You've only made 2 friends.
You've made * only* 2 friends, like it isn't enough somehow. And then it is followed by the message "Make more friends" as if that is what friendship is. Just add a few names to a list and bam you are popular, never mind if you've

LJ is still a source of humongous drama because if you "un-friend" someone on it, it's like cutting off their friendship. So weird to think about, that friendship and relationships must be "validated" by online social networking sites.

What amuses me the most is when I get notification, as has happened a couple of times, that they removed me as their friend just a day or two later... presumably when they read my Profile :#

I agree that the 'friending' abilities can be rather daunting. I don't understand why people feel the need to add so many friends. My brother for example, has more than 200 friends on his MSN, and over 500 on his FB. I've asked him, and he doesn't even recognise half of those names. So what's the point of having them there? Why categorise people like that, if they're not even acquaintances. Seems like a waste of precious resources to me.
Regardless... you are now one step closer to LJ popularity! I wonder if it will stop suggesting that you make more friends once you reach a certain threshold.

As for other places, on FB I have a lot of friends and use the groups setting to try and keep them straight. I have all my hol buddies in one and family and people from school. If I didn't I wouldn't recognize people either. My dad has a large family, one of my aunts has 18 kids and most I have never met but found on fb. A nifty way to chat with relatives I never would have talked to.
But my msn is much much smaller. it only has people I have actually talked to on there. And only a few HOL people. I love my msn for keeping in touch with my dad. It is one of the few things he can do with out too much trouble. But links are still hard for him to open with out opening 10 or 20 of them.
