this week's movie... Taken

Wow, it's been a while...

Let's see, life got a bit crazy. Liz turned in notice at her job at Regal's and was immediately terminated so we haven't been to the theater in a while. That was a long train wreck of a story and I'm still not sure exactly what happened 'cause it was that confusing to me. Too bad, she loved the job and most of the managers/coworkers.

Since then we've been crazy busy - me with getting resume written and approved. Both of us with packing and cleaning house (can't tell right now as it's all boxes and piles of things to go to charity). But things seem to be coming together.

Anyway, on the movie front we've been watching shows from Netflix. Fringe was okay, kind of intriguing and beguiling. I figured a few things out before the chars did and drove Liz nuts with that. I plan on watching season 2 at some point. We watched season 1 of NCIS: Los Angeles and the last disk was cruel! So many things I don't want to spoil folk about... all I can say definitively is that Liz' fav char is gone and the mind games they play with G. Callen are awesomely done but oh so very cruel. I can't wait until we can see season 2. We're currently in the middle of the Mentalist, Season 2 and Red John is just as creepy, terrifyingly omniscient and downright powerful as he was in Season 1. ::shivers::

So... the movie we watched most recently from the pile to be packed is Taken. Liam Neeson is just plain pretty, at least in my opinion. I'd seen a bunch of fanfics based on the movie which got me curious about it so when I saw it on sale (yeah, bad habit of mine, buying sale movies before I know if I'll like 'em). I was a little hesitant about letting Liz watch because of what I'd read, but it was tastefully and artfully done. There are a lot of implied things that are not actually on camera which was great. Personally, I don't mind shoot-em-ups and fight scenes if they're not blow by blow (ie, the audience doesn't get to see the blood splatter as the bullet enters/exits or the broken teeth and gore from punches as they go flying). This was well done, showing the direct result of the fights without going too far into the gore. The OD, the assaults, and the direct results of the kidnappings are referred to without being visual so it worked for me and for her.

Yes, I'm a protective mom, but the fact is that I've read enough news stories about kidnappings, child pornography & predator rings in France over the last decade to believe the story in the movie is very probably based on a real story. I don't even want to think about the stories that came out of Eastern Europe in the late 90's.

The subject matter was very hard but the movie did it well and again, tastefully.

kid, movies, ramblings, packing
