Poker question:

How do you handle a situation when you are short stacked in a cash game and you don't have any more money to buy in?  Do you just cash out?  Do you treat it like a tournament and look to double up or go home?

It depends on the game. There's some inherent edge in being short-stacked in many games, so I might just look for a place to take my shot. Or not.

Personally, I like being somewhat short-stacked. I buy in for 20-50 blinds often, and doubling up is just a start. However, I usually have 5+ rebuys in my pocket - buying short is a strategy, not a necessity.

I've found that I don't play well when I care about the outcome too much, including "if I lose this I have to go home". Oddly, my only counterstrategy to this error in my brain is to go home even earlier. Fortunately, I take frequent breaks to just walk around away from the table, and I usually realize I'm not having much fun tonight EXACTLY on those nights I'm losing a lot, so leaving is ok.
