So, what are my ten formative movies/shows? Gakked from
ceruleancat In no particular order:
01.
Highlander: This series of movies and television program was my first online fandom experience. I met in real life several good friends that I still visit frequently. I made a 'pilgrimage' to Scotland for the Homeland convention and gathering of international fans.
02.
Star Trek: The Original Series: As a small child, I copied everything my intensely cool older brother did. One of those things was to watch ST religiously. As I grew older, I realized the reason this show had and continues to have such an impact: Men, women, aliens, all creeds and all colors working together in harmony. No single being had less status than another except for military rank. All opinions were valued equally. No one was afraid to speak their minds. Still to this day an amazing feat, I must say.
03.
X-Files: My One True Fandom. I think my empathy with Mulder's pain and never ending quest for the 'Truth' will remain part of me for a very long time. All the characters had depth and conflicting emotions. Their relationships were real, flawed and often futile. It is also one fandom that I preferred to read 'canon' fic rather than slash or het romance, simply because of the complexity of the characters rather than sexual relationships.
04.
Smallville: Actually my love of this show pertains mostly to those adorable Luthors. The high school melodrama and freak of the week plot device are worthy of viewing for any glimpse of Lionel and or Lex. Complexity of characters here aplenty: Lionel revels in his wickedness and total control of Lex's life. Lex is a wonderfully angsty boy who is beautiful as well. The scenes where Messers Glover and Rosenbaum share screen time make me a very happy fan girl.
05.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof: My first experience with Tennessee Williams. At the time I was far too young to recognize all the subtext this play contained. As I grew older I read more of his plays: Suddenly Last Summer comes immediately to mind, as does Sweet Bird of Youth. I learned to notice the subtle nuance of dialogue from watching filmed plays and consider it a lesson well learned.
06.
The Haunting [1963]: I learned from this film that what the imagination can conjure is often more frightening than any image shown on screen. The entire movie was fraught with suspense and an imminent sense of danger. Julie Harris carried her role superbly and kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.
07.
Twin Peaks: This program surpassed all television, even the X-Files for strange and weird. Agent Dale Cooper, Sheriff Harry S. Truman, et al, gave us a small peek at life's other side each Friday. By the third episode, no one cared who killed Laura Palmer. We were all simply fascinated by the town's exotic citizens. I retain an abiding love for David Lynch and his films.
08.
In Cold Blood: Robert Blake broke my heart while repulsing me at the same time. These men murdered without conscience or fear, almost like they formed a single being instead of two individuals. It was the first time I ever watched an execution portrayed on film and I had nightmares afterwards.
09.
The Big Easy: This is a bit embarrassing to admit but the sex scene between Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin is the very first time I was aroused by watching such a thing on film. I reacted to her innocence and initial fear and his gentle manner and kindness . . . mmmmm.
10.
The Blair Witch Project: My sister
schaden_freude and I waited impatiently for this movie to preview. We visited the website almost daily for updates. Even knowing that it was a work of fiction did not deter our enthusiasm. After leaving the theatre we were so disturbed by the film that we went to a restaurant and sat for over an hour, before going home. The ending was totally unexpected and truly frightening to me. Again, when the film was released on DVD I ran out and immediately bought a copy. Unfortunately it was nowhere near as affective on the small screen and the jittery video camera effects made me slightly seasick.
