That's what I do when I'm cleaning out Ichabod's tank. Don't rinse them under fresh water from the tap though. I have a big bucket in the outhouse that I fill with water and then let it stand for a day or two. Otherwise it kills off the good bacteria in the filters and is bad for the fish.
I rinsed it under the tap because it had green gunge all over the outside. surely the bacteria in the tank will be on because it's still there. I didn't change the water in the tank at all
I never had a tank with this before, i always had undergravel filters in the past which I cleaned when I changed the water
you may get to the stage where you need to replace the sponge. The pebbly stuff can be cleaned by swirling the box thing in water that has been neutralised. Take it out and drain it a few times too. Drain it really well before you put it back, give it a good shake and then rinse it with a couple of cups of water from the tank! We had a similar arrangement in the tanks I looked after at school. Although the spongy filter was more like natural sponge.
Hmmm, I'd liek to get one that's rectancular and long. I have an opening where I could put it in my living room that's about 6 feet or so. I think it would really give the room a fresh look and I've always wanted a fish tank. Ok cool, I will add you back.
I used to have 2 3foot ones on a stand one above the other. This was many years ago. I didn't have fish again till recntly, had about 8 years off I'd guess
