Love, Hate, and Notre Dame Football

I've been a Notre Dame fan since birth. My father attended the Holy Mother's law school during the Joe Montana days. Both my parents are from the East Coast, so they're profoundly disinterested in the IU-Purdue feud. So am I: I grew up during the twilight of Coach Knight, and Indiana University football has been a wasteland since time immemorial, ( Read more... )

Hi! My name is Randi and I know duchessdollydot. She mentioned that you were thinking about coming to Japan to teach English, and right now, I am in Japan teaching English, so I thought if you have any questions or anything, I'd be happy to try to answer. I actually just finished working yesterday, but I'll still be in Japan for two weeks. I worked in an eikaiwa, a conversation school, and not a real school. Being an ALT in a school and being an eikaiwa instructor are totally different.

Sorry if you already know all this and I'm just restating. But like I said, I'd be glad to answer any questions. Email me or ask here, anything's good.

Mata ne!

Hi, Randi! I'm applying for JET, but I'd certainly be interested in hearing your experiences in Japan. One thing I've been wondering is how quickly you were able to pick up the language.

Be seeing you!

In my opinion, JET is definitely your best bet right now. There's all sorts of nonsense going down with schools like Nova (where I work) because Nova hasn't been paying rent or salaries (that's a whole 'nother thing that your poor sister has been forced to read about ad nauseam on my LJ), and the bad publicity is spreading to other schools, like AEON and GEOS. So, good choice!

For a JET perspective, I recommend (if you haven't heard of it already) the website Gaijin Smash which is a funny but all-too-true look at Japanese culture. It's really a good slice-of-life story of Japan. I thought for sure he was exaggerating, and I've come to find he really doesn't ( ... )
