here 1/Layer 2: This cap is in HD and blu-ray quality which means it walling you for a close up. And, it is also perfect for super lazy people (like me) because usually you don't have to work a lot on them to have something good. First of all, resize the cap.
Image -> Resize
Slide it to your icon base. Then, play around with it a little bit so that you'll find the crop you want.
2/Brightness/Contrast 1: I always begin with a brightness/contrast layer when I'm working on really high quality images.
Layer -> New Adjustement Layer -> Brightness/Contrast
Brightness: 98
Contrast: 100
3/Color Balance 1: As you can see, the icon is greenish/yellowish, the kind of green/yellow I don't like. It is time to loco it a little bit. I decided to begin with a color balance layer to control the whole coloring (from the light to the shadows)
Layer -> New adjustments layer -> Color balance layer
Midtones: +24, -37, -09
As I'm happy with the result without changing the shadows and highlights, I leave the alone.
Result
4/Layer 6: I wanted to add some lights to the icon. I will add a bit of light to have this effect. For that I open a new layer and use a paint brush to create a texture. I painted
this and set it to screen, opacity of 100%.
5/Layer 7: Same thing than for layer 6 but I did
this texture. I set it to screen but only at 75% of opacity to not create kind of veil on the icon (I like when an icon has contrast)
6/Layer 2 copy: As you see, the icon does have a little veil and no contrast. It also lost a bit of colors (due to the 2 layers) so I decided to duplicate the base, move it at the top of the layers and set it to soft light.
Result
7/Vibrance 1: As you can see, we still see the lights and a bit of colors has been lost. But I don't want to lose the light effect so I opened the vibrance tool
Layer -> New adjustments layer -> Vibrance
Vibrance: +60
Saturation: +05
Result
8/Color Balance 2: As you see, contrasts perfect, light, perfect but yellow not good at all. So I opened a new color balance layer:
Layer -> New adjustments layer -> Color balance layer
Midtones: +01, +05, +44
Perfect! Now, merge all your layers and sharpen the icon:
Filter -> Sharpen -> Sharpen
then
Edit -> Fade sharpen
I always fade the sharpeness a bit because I don't want icons to be too sharpen (you will lose the light effect). And you're done!

here 1/Layer 5: This cap is not a blu ray one as the previous tutorial so it is harder to work with BUT as I didn't want to any close crop, the quality doesn't matter. It is just enough. In short (to digress a bit about caps) if your cap is low quality, resize as much as you can, the higher the quality of the cap will be, the closer your crop can be.
Image -> Resize
I resize this image to have 100pixels of width. Slide it to your icon base.
2/Brightness/contrast 1: This movie is a bit particular because it is colorful by itself (thank you, oh great Danny Boyle) so I first decided to brighten it.
Layer -> New Adjustement Layer -> Brightness/Contrast
Brightness: 130
Contrast: 52
Result
3/Color balance 1: As you see, the icon is already colorful but I wanted it to be a bit more red/blue and put away the yellow. So I opened a color balance layer.
Layer -> New adjustments layer -> Color balance layer
Midtones: -08, +03, +36
4/Brightness/contrast 2: As you see, the coloring is a bit better but the icon is darker. So open a brightness/contrast layer
Layer -> New Adjustement Layer -> Brightness/Contrast
Brightness: 23
Contrast: 19
Result
5/Layer 3: I wanted to add a bit of light and this texture seemed perfect because it ads lights on the top, just like the light on the cap itself. Open
this texture (by
ohfreckle) and set it to screen, 32% of opacity.
6/Layer 5 copy: As you see, the contrasts are gone. To have them back and pimp the colors in the mean time, duplicate the base, put it at the top of the layer list and set it to soft light.
Result
7/Color fill 1: In order to fill the LJ standards, the icon has to be 100*100 so I open a fill layer under the base.
Layer -> New Fill Layer -> Solid Color
In order to find the right color, I try to find a matching color picking up random colors that already are on the icon. For this layer, it was #f88263.
8/Merge all your layers and then
Filter -> Sharpen -> Sharpen
then
Edit -> Fade sharpen
Be sure to fade it so that it won' tlook too sharpen.
