Tools on Photoshop CS5:
- Brightness/contrast
- Color Balance

Layer List here

1/Layer 4: For this cap, I wanted a close crop involving both characters. The cap is in good quality and you can see it is already in a beautiful color. So I wanted mainly to keep the natural coloring. The tutorial will so be nearly only how to enhance a natural coloring.
First of all, resize and crop.

2/Brightness/contrast: As I said, I like the coloring of the cap so I begun by a brightness/contrast layer:

Layer -> New Adjustement Layer -> Brightness/Contrast
Brightness: +07
Contrast: 0

3/Color balance 1: Now, we'll work a bit on the coloring. It looks a bit purpleish/brownish and I want to add some yellow. It will make the icon brighter and the coloring pimp a bit more.

Layer -> New adjustments layer -> Color balance layer
Midtones: +31, +01, -24

4/Brightness/contrast 2: I want more light at this point and try more contrast to see if I can create a very dark background with her hair. It would increase the focus on their faces.

Layer -> New Adjustement Layer -> Brightness/Contrast
Brightness: +43
Contrast: +23

5/Color balance 2: As you see, all the natural coloring I wanted to keep is lost. But I like the brightness and the contrast so I just need the coloring back.

Layer -> New adjustments layer -> Color balance layer
Midtones: -24, +16, +40

6/Brightness/contrast 3: When you play with colors, you always lost a bit of light/contrast. But here, the damages aren't awful so it wil just be a little push up.

Layer -> New Adjustement Layer -> Brightness/Contrast
Brightness: +07
Contrast: 0

7/Final: Now, merge all your layers and sharpen the icon:

Filter -> Sharpen -> Sharpen
then
Edit -> Fade sharpen

Tools on Photoshop CS5:
- Vibrance
- Color balance
- Brightness/contrast
- Smudge tool

Layer list here

1/Layer 2: I wanted negative space on that icon. The reason? I wanted to focus on the character. Hawaii Five 0 is very colorful by itself and the fact the light is in the background can give a great effect on the icon. So I resized the cap around 80px of height and put it on my icon base. Then with a smudge tool (size around 6 and strength of 40%) I extended the dark background.

2/Layer 2 copy 3: I need more light. I duplicated the base and set it to screen. The trouble is that I'm losing all the effect of the contrast between the colors of the character and the dark background. So I set the opacity to only 30% to lighten a bit but not loosing the natural effect of the cap.

3/Brightness/contrast 1: To enhance the light and the contrast, the easiest is a brightness/contrast layer. I increased the contrast a lot to get the effect I wanted.

Layer -> New Adjustement Layer -> Brightness/Contrast
Brightness: +120
Contrast: +100

4/Vibrance 1: As you see, the cap is already colorful. I want them to pimp a lot and the vibrance tool is awesome for that. I'll be honest, for a reason I can't remember, I lower the saturation. It is probably because it looked less yellowish when the saturation is lower. But I can't remember.

Layer -> New Adjustement Layer -> Vibrance
Vibrance: +100
Saturation: -05

5/Color balance 1: This part is really a question of taste. (this is why I had 2 alternates of this icon) I liked the green coloring as it is (and for those who watch, it also fits the colors of this scene) but I also wanted to try to pimp the colors even more. Instead of using a vibrance tool again, I went for a color balance layer and add some yellows. Yellows have the gift to make an icon a bit more colorful.

Layer -> New Adjustement Layer -> Color Balance
Midtones: +19, -27, -54
Highlights: 0, 0, -16

6/Final: The icon is already sharp so I merge everything. Something bugs me though, the little bright greenish "cloud" or whatever on the top left si I use the sludge tool to make it disapear and have a dark top. And then I save it.
