somewhere beyond words

Even nowadays doojoon blames hyunseung, because he’s sure he was planning it all since the very beginning and the beginning of time and beyond.

(actually it’s because it’s easier to blame hyunseung than himself for something no one could expect)

Yoon doojoon used to be a normal high school guy. He was keen on sports and it had been a year since he became the captain of the school’s soccer team, so his life just turned around sports, sports, soccer and soccer.

He didn’t have too much time to go online, in fact, he wasn’t skillful with technology and it gave him headaches to use his phone, even to text his friends (and the better part of the time his texts were unreadable)

He used to have a happy life away from technology, all he needed was a ball and a goal to make his life complete.

But here is when hyunseung appears and drags doojoon to his deepest darkness. Well, it wasn’t actually like that. During their lunch time, hyunseung told him about a new game he got and doojoon was curious and wanted to try.

And there was no turning back, though doojoon didn’t know back then.

Hyunseung was baffled with this new doojoon willing to deal with role playing games, but then he shrugged and gave him some advices about the game doojoon didn’t understand at all, but he tried to make his best effort.

There was a weird advice though. Hyunseung explained to him about what a role playing game was and told him he should start with a girl character since he was a beginner, because normally the oldest and most experienced gamers were nerds starving for a gamer girl, and they wouldn’t think about it twice at the time to help a supposed girl within a game where the boys abound.

At first doojoon thought it was insane, but then he realized it made a lot of sense. And he lost his dignity and suggestible doojoon did as friend hyunseung said.

There was no more healthy life, no more soccer, no more captaincy, just doojoon and his game, and his eyes glued to the screen all day and night.

It was weird to get used to his female character within the game (doojoon was a pretty white elf, where the hell did he leave his male dignity), but when hyunseung’s theory turned out to be real, he started to enjoy this game more than he could expect.

He met a dark knight a few days after he started playing and he had compassion with this new inexperienced player. He decided to take care of her. And as days gone by, the elf and the dark night started a relationship in pursuit of share their profits (more like the knight gave the elf all the money so doojoon could buy all he wanted)

Doojoon was happy he had listened to hyunseung’s advice ‘cause now he could do whatever he wanted since he had money, but sometimes he felt sorry he was wasting all this guy had in someone who didn’t have real interest in him, he felt sorry he was cheating on him like that, getting his hopes up, when all he wanted was to play this role game.

But he started to become nervous when he began to ask him to meet in real life.

Fuck, he got me…

The dark knight insisted and insisted and it seemed like something really serious and grave to him so doojoon couldn’t help but agree at the end, regretting the same moment in which he gave in.

Doojoon gets on the subway. It’s a Sunday morning and he travels through Seoul to meet this guy. They decided to meet in Han River’s park at 11 am, and doojoon has thought several times to get off and take the train in the opposite way.

He’s an idiot, he could have just stop playing and disappear from the game, but here he is, facing his problems which it’s supposed to be brave but now he feels like a big, big idiot.

How will he look like? the impression he has from a role gamer is not too far from a skinny guy with glasses and hair covering his eyes, too shy to get real friends, too afraid to live his life, pretending he’s someone in this virtual world. Doojoon didn’t mean to let him down like this, but what he can do now? It’s all hyunseung’s fault.

Or maybe this guy is a bully and he will kill doojoon when he finds out. And doojoon shivers at the thought.

He don’t want to see his disappointed face when he finds out it’s not a girl but a guy (a well-built one), so he will come, say he’s sorry and he will leave, and they won’t meet. Ever again.

When doojoon arrives, there’s a lot of people in the park, but he doesn’t find this guy. He said he was blond and he was going to wear a light blue sweatshirt, but he doesn’t find any guy with this aspect.

He walks a little more and his heart stops for a moment when he finds him sitting on a bench, his hands in his pockets and his eyes behind his blond hair.

He stares at him for a while. He’s like a little boy, he looks very young and somehow, disappointed from life. He expected anything, but he wasn’t planning to find someone like him.

His chest aches and doojoon feels sorry he's going to disappoint him even more, but it wouldn't be correct to turn back and just let it be.

He steps forward and the guy lifts his glance, blushing in the instant he meets doojoon’s eyes.

“Hey…” doojoon murmurs. The boy looks puzzled.

The boy just nods. There’s an awkward silence then. The boy just stares at him with his big eyes and doojoon is unable to talk because of this knot disturbing his throat.

“I’m sorry” doojoon says, diverting his glance. The boy blinks in astonishment, because he doesn’t understand why a stranger is apologizing. “I’ve been lying to you all along. I’m the gamer who you were supposed to meet today. I’m really sorry…” the moment he turns back, willing to leave, he feels a strong grip around his wrist. It’s the boy. Doojoon looks at him, but he doesn’t say a word, he moves his lips to say something, but no sound comes out rather than a throaty growl.

Doojoon holds his breathe for a moment and his eyes widens. It cannot be…

“D… n…t… g-go…” he manages to say with a lot of effort. It’s more like a babbling than a proper sentence. Like he had learnt the mouth movements, but he had never come to know how the words sounded, as if he were deaf-mute.

Doojoon has the impulse to rid of him and run away, as away as he could, wherever he can forget about him, but he’s scared and he can’t move because he’s frozen.

“You… hear me?” he says, this time slower. He notices the guy’s eyes are focused on his lips.

He nods. He can read lips.

“What’s… What’s your name?” asks doojoon. The boy sits again in the bench and takes out a paper and a pen from his pocket. He writes down some words with a neat calligraphy and hands the paper to doojoon. He had taken a seat beside him.

I’m yang yoseob. I didn’t mean to do this, but I just thought you had to know the truth. But now that we both had lied to each other, I think we are even, aren’t we?

Doojoon stares at the paper, blankly. He wants to cry, he doesn’t know why. And only god knows how much he hates to cry.

Yoseob takes the paper again and writes a little sentence with irregular strokes. His hands are trembling.

Are you scared?

Doojoon shakes his head slowly. No, he’s not. He feels guilty. Because he was this close to not coming and leaving him alone, waiting, who knows how long he would wait for him to come.

“I’m really sorry” doojoon says, and probably yoseob didn’t understand a word since he couldn’t talk properly because of the threatening tears.

It’s hard to convince yoseob that doojoon is not doing this because he’s sorry for him but because he wants to. There’s not more soccer, nor more role playing games, now it’s only yoseob for him, just yoseob for him.

He can’t call him, they can’t talk by phone. It takes time to comprehend what yoseob tries to say and sometimes doojoon talks too fast. But doojoon doesn’t care, and he waits for him after school almost every day and they take a ride together through Seoul.

Sometimes doojoon buys him an ice cream, sometimes they hold hands. Sometimes they stay silent, wrapped by yoseob’s world.

Doojoon is not sure why he’s doing this, he just knows he wants to take care of this little boy, and don’t ever let him down again.

Maybe he can’t hear the ringing of rain against a window pane (and they run to take shelter from storm), but at least, he can see all the beautiful colors from the rainbow when the sky clears (while doojoon holds his hand, firmly).

And doojoon wants to show him every one of those bright colors.

(it was weird how they met, and yoseob usually makes fun of him because of his female character, but everything in the middle made it worth crossing their roads. And it was all hyunseung’s fault, after all.)
