다시돌아와 (come back again)
first shot

Sungjong sighs and decides irrevocably that the things he will always hate the most is the age difference between him and Myungsoo.

It’s not too much, just a year, just some months, but he hates it anyway. Sometimes he thinks that if Myungsoo would only have born a few months before or if he could only have born a few months later everything would be so different and they wouldn’t be parted by a year. A year. It’s not too much. But a lot of things can happen in a year.

They met, they became friends, they had those awkward moments when it’s not just friendship what keeps people together, their fingers find their way to intertwine together, they kissed, and love started. During a year. And Sungjong doesn’t want to be pessimistic but now that Myungsoo graduates from school and moves to his uncle’s house in Busan (because he decided to enter Busan’s university, even before they met) he’s starting to wonder whether if what they usually say about how distance kills relationships is true or not.

Sungjong doesn’t want to let him go now that he has found him, but he knows he’s not important enough for Myungsoo to desert all the plans he has made for his life.

“will you come to tomorrow’s ceremony?” Sungjong hears his voice on the other side of the phone. It’s late at night and the younger is still studying because his last exams haven’t finished yet. Sungjong puts his pencil aside and sighs.

“of course I will” he says and he can almost hear his smile from the other line.

“but don’t go if you are tired, I can see you are still studying.”

Sungjong attends Myungsoo’s graduation ceremony with five cups of coffee running through his blood. He slept something like twenty minutes during the night and what the speaker is saying, standing on the platform sounds like a distant and incomprehensible buzz to his ears. All he can see is Myungsoo’s side, with his back turned to him, looking flawless and stunning, as usual, wearing his clean and blue uniform. His eyes sometimes divert from the ceremony and tries to finds Sungjong’s, smiling and waving his hand to him when they met. Sungjong waves his hand back and decides he can’t be luckier than this, he just can’t.

When the ceremony ends, the day is dying in the horizon and the twilight paints the sky in a creamy orange. Myungsoo’s parents come to congratulate their son and he asks them to give him a moment so he can talk alone with Sungjong.

They go for a stroll in the school, their fingers finding their way at moments but then letting them go, in order to not be seen (but at this point, it’s something Sungjong doesn’t really care about). The sun lengthens their shadows projected on the floor and Sungjong thinks it really looks like the picture of a farewell. Myungsoo looks at him, half of his face covered in shadows and his black hair shining in orange sparkles.

“I’m leaving the day after tomorrow” he says. Sungjong feels a twinge of pain near his heart.

“I see” there’s an awkward silence in which the younger realizes that in the end, he wasn’t important enough to Myungsoo for him to change his plans.

“but will you come to see me off at the airport?” he asks and Sungjong manages to smile even when something hurts deep inside.

“Pabo. You already know, so why do you ask?”

They don’t talk about crumbled and shattered relationships nor that distance kills the love. It doesn’t look like something that really worries Myungsoo but if it were Sungjong, he’d tie the elder down so he wouldn’t be able to fly far away from him.

He goes to see his boyfriend off, puts a weak smile on his face and wishes him good luck during this new period of life that is just beginning (this new period of life in which he’s not part of). Myungsoo hugs him and whispers into his ear an I love you and that he will come back soon.

Myungsoo goes on board and the plane takes off. Sungjong stays at the airport until it fades away in the sky. And despite that he’s surrounded by people, movement and the distant buzzing of the planes, he doesn’t think he has ever felt as lonely as he does today.
