As far as I understand it, because OSX is built on UNIX, there's the whole permissions stuff that means that even if there were viruses, they couldn't destroy your system, just maybe delete some non crucial files. It doesn't mean there aren't ways that viruses could get through (there are known holes in Safari), just means that they aren't as dangerous as Windows viruses. Another point is that Macs aren't infected by all the Windows viruses out there.
Unix does not mean safe. There have been virus on UNIX bases systems before. They aren't as common as Windows but that does not mean they are 100% safe. And whats is considered not crucial files? If you lose your home directory with all your documents in it? Was that a crucial file or not? Systems up and running but you just lost your work for the last 10 years. I still think Mac is playing the game of security through obscruity which is not security.
