I had classes in some of those rooms. They were pretty big, with the larger ones having downward sloped floors and stairways to reach the lectern and entry-ways. From the open entry-way spaces there's some distance to reach the first seats, and anyone sitting there has to maneuver around the desks to reach the front. The regular classrooms are maybe like the medium to large classrooms at MIT. Point being, there's a lot of ground to cover. From reading most of the major articles out there it sounds every bit like he picked off people who got anywhere close to him. I'm totally with you in wondering why few defensive efforts were described to us, and I can only piece it together like this. Imagine you're Cho and you enter into a wide open area, say 10-15' radius around you. As anyone enters that space you coolly target them. A coordinated effort could have pulled something off but people are dazed and not communicating or coordinating. Protip: fire extinguishers make quite serviceable improvised weapons. They are heavy and easily swung, and can be used to disorient individuals. Conveniently, they are available in almost all offices, homes, and public buildings.

You underestimate how fast a person can work a gun. Any situation that involves abandoning cover to rush at an armed person with your bare hands is not likely to work out in your favor even if you're a jeet-kune-do badass and they're a barely competent marksman. All they have to do is twitch and you're out of commission -- if not dying, then very seriously injured ( ... )
