From the other side of the pond (and inside the industry): we are blessed by the BBC in terms of the fact that ratings for a drama aren't necessarily what they'll use when it comes to ordering another series (although 1.2m overnights is a fair average for a BBC weekday evening drama - for context, getting 8-9m for an episode of Sherlock is stratospherically high). They champion their dramas - they commission them based on their passion for them, and in this case they know they have a high, high quality show. If it doesn't get recommissioned, I will bet serious money it's because they cast too many amazing and in-demand actors and that their writer is being poached by the film industry - not ratings (just to put your mind at rest!).
