I think of myself as a pretty laid-back person who isn't easily upset. (I may be biased :-) But there are just SOME THINGS that I have a hard time not getting worked up about. Well, one in particular
( Read more... )
now THAT is just wrong. Oo. i actually got a bit angry on your behalf on that one. (Partially because my initial reaction was "wait, why would anyone assume a physics major wanted to teach? Science! Research! Moolah! Bwuh?" I mean, teach at the Ph.D. level, okay, but...man, I've never heard of a science major getting asked if they wanted to teach. Wild.)
Only because my Ate is also an art major (combined with comp sci. She wants to be an animator or deal with some kind of graphics. ^^)
You know what? I think haters are gonna hate. It doesn't only happen for art. It happens for EVERYTHING, because people like to think that they're studying something more worthwhile than you. I absolutely hate it when I tell people that I'm in Computer Science and they ask me, "Oh, so you're going to be a code monkey?" I mean, come on!! I didn't say I'm a programmer. I said I was a computer scientist... *scientist*.
Same with English majors. You tell them you want to study English, they assume you want to be a journalist. *rolls eyes*.
And then there are people who don't go to post-secondary school at all and they ask you if you're in college and you say yes, and they're all "Hah! Look at me. Never wasted four years of my life, didn't waste fifty thousand bucks, and I ended up exactly where you wanna be."
Yeah,. I guess people are just going to think what they want and make uninformed comments about stuff... because thats how it is. Hm. I'm working on getting over it... :-}
and your major is really worse because it really does rely on personal talent and subjective tastes and so it's like WELL I HOPE YOU'RE GOOD AT IT (and I know you are, girl).
at least with English it's just like "oh, do you want fries with that?" without implying that, you know, I suck at what I do on top of it. Ouch. *HUGS*
(although with English [and Philosophy, let's not even start with the "people still major in that?" looks {also possibly there's like implications of "the only people who major in that are crazy"}] there's the whole "oh, so you're going to teach?" bit, and, like, teaching is A LOT OF WORK and not for everybody and not every English major is going to teach. [...but I am because I love it, but that has less to do with the major and more to do with me, so, nyah.])
I think English is a really useful, versatile major. (I'm minoring in it... sort of.) But alot of people don't see it as being practical.
I think the safest bet is to not assume you know anything about anyone elses major. Don't say "So you want to ______", just say, "Wow, cool, what do you want to do with that?"

I used to get: "Oh, you're a physics major. Do you want to teach?"*
*This question was never asked of the guys who were majoring in physics.
