1 Month Fic-a-versary!/Remus Drabble Series: 1001 Yellow Daffodils

Mar 07, 2005 09:03

Hey everyone :)

Well, it's been exactly one month since I started posting fic at LJ. It actually feels like much longer than that to me. I love that I've met so many crazy, wonderful people, and it thrills me to no end that you're kind enough to give me feedback on my stories.

So I'm breaking my LJ-exile again to post a Remus/Surprise Somebody series of drabbles to celebrate. Cheers, everyone!

Title: One Thousand and One Yellow Daffodils
Author: rose_whispers
Pairing: Remus Lupin/?
Rating: PG
Summary: Dumbledore sends Remus to get information out of someone. Hijinks ensue.
Word Count: 1001
A/N: It's my one month fic-a-versary! I was going to write some Snupin to celebrate, but this fluffy bunny jumped on me at work and wouldn't go away until I'd written the story down. A series of ten connected drabbles (the last one’s 101 words, to make the title work). The title comes from Queen's "I'm Going Slightly Mad"

Cross posted.

One
"Have I done something to offend you, Albus?"

The Headmaster's expression betrays no hint of amusement. He looks ancient and weary. "This isn't punishment, Remus. This is vital to the Order."

"But why me? I'm a dark creature. He used to kill dark creatures. Or claimed to, at any rate."

"You're also a compassionate man, Remus, one who will have the patience to coax out of him what we need to know."

Remus does his best to smile in what he hopes is a helpful and not at all resigned fashion. "I'll go to St. Mungo's in the morning, then."

Two
"Gilderoy, my name is Remus."

The man across from him smiles brightly and gives him a wink. "Another fan, eh?"

"Not a fan," Remus says too quickly. At the flash of bewildered hurt in Gilderoy's eyes, he adds, "I'm a friend. I heard that something terrible happened here, Gilderoy. Something that caused the deaths of several patients. I want to talk to you about that."

"I see. I don't remember anything out of the ordinary."

Remus sighs. This will take some work.

"Would you like my autograph, Remus?"

"Would you like mine?"

Gilderoy blinks, startled. "Yes, I believe I would."

Three
"Remus! You came back!"

The werewolf grins in spite of himself at the exuberant greeting. As Gilderoy shakes his hand zealously, Remus notices the piece of paper with his signature scrawled across it pinned beside Gilderoy's bed.

A mediwitch bustles over and takes Remus aside. "He remembered you? He never remembers anyone, Mr. Lupin."

"Good. Perhaps we can find out just what he saw that night."

The mediwitch leaves and Remus smiles again at Lockhart. "I enjoyed our little chat last week, Gilderoy."

"Me too. I read that book on dark creatures you gave me. Remus, are you a werewolf?"

Four
"Did you transform last night?"

Muscles aching, Remus tumbles into a heap in a chair across from Gilderoy's bed. "Just as I do with every full moon."

"Does it hurt? It must hurt."

Remus nods. "Yes. Yes, it does."

"But you still came to talk to me."

"I did."

"I don't mind that you're a werewolf, you know."

"And I don't mind that you're an amnesiac."

"I've been practicing backgammon, just as you taught me."

"I’m a bit tired for it today."

"Lie down, then. We'll chat later."

Halfway asleep, Remus almost misses the brush of fingers across his cheek.

Five
"They've let me use a practice wand, Remus. Look what I can do!"

With a flourish, Gilderoy waves the five-inch wand and with a crack produces a single yellow daffodil.

"Well done!" Remus enthuses, but his delighted laughter falters when Gilderoy leans forward and presents the flower to him.

"I remember how to do magic better when you're here. I remember everything a bit more clearly with you."

Remus shifts the daffodil from hand to hand, trying not to blush. "Do you remember what happened the night Alice and Frank Longbottom were murdered?"

"I don't want to talk about that."

Six
"What utter rot!"

"Excuse me?"

"I know you, Remus, and what they've written here about werewolves is not accurate at all. Not if you're a typical example."

Remus tries not to laugh. "Gilderoy, that's 'Wandering with Werewolves'. You wrote that."

"I didn't!"

"You did."

Gilderoy, for all that Remus thinks he is still a silly git, has the good grace to look scandalized. "I should like to write a new book, then. Will you help me? I think we'd make an excellent team."

A strange little thrill dances down Remus' spine, and he can't look Gilderoy in the eyes. "Perhaps."

Seven
Remus and Gilderoy stand by the window, watching the stars and the Muggles below and nothing at all.

"It's been two months. You've given up on me remembering what happened that night." Not a question.

"Yes."

"But you still come to see me."

Remus shrugs, words dying in his throat as Gilderoy turns, standing a bit too close. A question rests in Gilderoy's eyes as he leans in, chin tilted upward, and grazes his lips against Remus'. Remus' hands settle on Gilderoy's shoulders as Gilderoy's arms twine about his waist and his tongue coaxes Remus' lips apart, finding his answer.

Eight
"Why'd you rush off?"

Remus blushes. What can he say? Because he allowed Gilderoy to kiss him. Because he kissed him back. Because he liked it and he wanted it to go on. With Gilderoy bloody Lockhart. Ridiculous!

"It was a mistake."

"You're the only person who accepts me for me, Remus," he says, turning on that grin that very rightly won Witch Weekly's Best Smile. "I can talk to you about anything. You listen. You make me laugh."

"Me too," Remus admits, and Gilderoy catches him in another kiss that leaves him breathless and dizzy and excited and safe.

Nine
Gilderoy is handing out the last of the day's autographs when Remus slips an arm around his shoulders in what has already become a familiar gesture.

"I came as soon as I got your summons. What's wrong?"

Gilderoy looks up at him, sorrow lurking in his eyes. "I remember."

"What?"

"That night. They didn't realize I was there. I hid, or they'd have killed me, too. Three Death Eaters in masks."

"Did you hear names?"

"Malfoy. Nott. Goyle."

Gilderoy sobs and Remus gathers him close. "It's all right, love. You've done well. I'm here now."

"Will you be here forever?"

Ten
Gilderoy putters about the quarters he now shares with Remus at Grimmauld Place.

Dumbledore appears and beams knowingly at Remus. "I told you you'd be the right man for the job."

"It's not as if you planned this, Albus."

"Didn't I?"

"Remus, look! I can put these pictures of me to hand out in this wardrobe."

Remus shakes his head. How did he end up like this? He knows it happened somewhere between Gilderoy's acceptance of his lycanthropy and their first kiss.

Gilderoy gives Remus a deliberate, dissolute kiss. "Would you like my autograph?"

Remus laughs. "Would you like mine?"

"Always."
