Due South

So, thanks to the recommendation from allzugern I started watching "Due South" and was pleasantly surprised. Very entertaining show, Paul Gross is much more multi-layered and subtle as Benton Fraser than I expected and David Marciano is an interesting and likable Ray Vecchio. The wolf is also nicely done, cute enough but not overtaking the show. ( Read more... )

You will not be disappointed with Due South! I heart Fraser to death. What I really like about the show is that it can be absurd and you still don't find yourself with the problem of suspension of disbelief, because the show doesn't expect you to take it seriously. And STILL it is endearing and joyful and just damn well written. S1 and S2 are very good, but for me, 3 and 4 were just the high point of a well written TV series. I'm so glad you decided to take the plunge :-)

Since you were praising the later seasons I picked one episode from the last DVD, and also because I was curious about Ray Kowalski. The episode was "Good for the Soul" and I was quite disappointed. The story was dragging and depressing and the sequence were Fraser is beaten by the thugs of the mobster - quite predictably - and then simply walks away and gets nursed by Frannie, only for the facial wounds, and then finally his "friends" from the police decide to participate in Fraser's (quite surreal IMO) fight after telling everyone and their grandmother that this mobster can do what he wants... I sincerely hope that was an abnormally bad episode. I think I will continue to watch in order, which will mean ep. 4 from the first season is next.

Gah, you did manage to pick the one episode I wasn't too fond of! Though in the large picture there were undercurrents in the ep - mostly about Ray and Fraser's relationship - that did strike me and also get a lot of play in fan fic.

In S1, the eps I liked least were 'an invitation to romance', 'the man who knew too little', and in S2 it was 'starman' and 'north'. The true joy of S3 and S4 is the relationship between Ray and Benton. You just don't get any slashier or hotter then that show.

It's too bad you already got your dvd's, as I discovered a new site where you can dl .avi episode files.
