CHARACTER INFORMATION-
Canon Character and Series: Utena Tenjou (Revolutionary Girl Utena)
In-Game Name: Utena Tenjou
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Position & Ship: Boatswain, 4423
Appearance:
Utena Tenjou stands out in a crowd, and to be honest, it's not because of the height, or the long, bubblegum pink hair, or the ethereally blue eyes. The most eye-catching thing about her is her manner of dress, which is very androgynous, but always elaborate and carried off with flair. While not exhibitionistic, promiscuous, or vain, she lacks the discomfort with her body that many other women have, and tends not to concern herself overmuch with her state of dress. Her clothing can also tend to be a little shorter in the legs or tighter than others might be comfortable with.
She is on the tall side of average, around 5' 9". Her build is athletic, and while even her boyish style of dress would never be enough to get her mistaken for a boy, her body is not very overtly feminine. She is long-legged and slender, but her inclination towards an active lifestyle has blessed her with physical strength.
Utena's face, on the other hand, is very feminine. Her eyes are wide and blue, with thick lashes. Her lips are full. Her nose is slightly pointed. Her hair is long, thick, bright pink, and worn unbound even when she is exerting herself; her bangs are long, and frame her face. On the whole, her face has a slightly childish, almost fey sort of appearance to it.
Also, since she's sort of post-series, she has two thin scars, one on her back and a rougher one near her sternum, from where she was stabbed.
Personality:
Utena is a brave and valiant prince.
Yes, a prince. Utena is tomboyish in the extreme, fond of dressing in a much more masculine style than her female contemporaries and pursuing a wide variety of traditionally masculine pursuits. She is independent, hot-tempered, and courageous, rarely hesitating to do anything she thinks necessary or right.
Among her strongest traits are her compassion and her noble spirit. She is quick to come to the aid of anyone she sees suffering, even if that person is unpopular or difficult to approach. Even when dealing with someone emotionally shut off, she is tenacious and persistently caring. Her ability to put others before herself, time and time again, even when it hurts her, distinguishes her from others, whose motives are almost always more selfish.
This isn't to say that she is a pushover, in any way, shape, or form. Indeed, she is strongly independent, and can be aggressive and downright fierce to those who she sees as injust or hurting other people. She is never shy about speaking her mind, or passive when anything worth speaking of is on the lines. No matter who her opinion is unpopular with, be they peers or superiors, she does not back down from her ideals, and does not show fear in dealing with them. This spirit often earns her mixed reactions, from condescending amusement at her "spunk" or grudging appreciation to near hero-worship (typically from younger or less empowered young women).
Her dedication to a chivalrous ideal has also left her somewhat naïve. She is slow to see the bad in people, even when given ample opportunity to do so; for this reason, she is often vulnerable to being manipulated and taken advantage of. Her sense of justice drives her, and she is always compelled to champion the weak and the downtrodden.
Abilities/Weapons:
Utena is strong-willed and brave, capable of tackling any challenge face to face. Her personal strength is often inspiring to others, and she has the potential to be a good leader. She is more clever than booksmart, and more intuitive than either of the above.
She is good at athletic activities of all sorts, and her speed, balance, and reaction time are all noteworthy. While her training as a swordsman, previous to entering into the duels over Anthy, was virtually nonexistant, she's gone toe to toe with some of the best duelists in all of Reial and never once had a loss she didn't make up for in a rematch. Her greatest assets as a fighter are her purpose and determination; her will is truly incredible, and she never backs away when something she cares about is on the line.
How well can your character hack?:
She might be able to hack the most basic of basic things, but I doubt she'd be all that inclined to if she could.
Weaknesses:
As mentioned, her blind devotion to her chivalrous principles can get her into a lot of trouble, especially when people manipulate her selfless, caring nature. For all her strengths, there's a side of her that's a fairly typical young girl, too quick to trust those who show her small kindnesses. She can be almost painfully naïve at times, especially when it comes to the matter of being betrayed or overexposing herself psychologically.
Her aggressive nature, at times, can do more harm than good. She often forgets that it isn't as easy for others, especially other women, to take charge of their lives and chase what they really want as it is for her to do so; on the other side of things, she can be overprotective, and some may see her chivalry as condescending, like she's making the assumption that those she protects can't take care of themselves.
History:
Stories often start with "once upon a time"; the difficult part is getting your "happily ever after". For some, it comes easily. For some, it never comes at all. For Utena Tenjou, it doesn't need to come on its own, because she has the power to make her own.
Utena was orphaned at the age of six, and the loss of her parents devastated her. The sudden realization of how fine a line keeps humans away from death was a shock, and, deciding that it was best just to get it over with if all humans were doomed to die anyway, she curled up in a coffin and waited for death to claim her. That wasn't to be the end of the story, though-a mysterious prince showed up, drew her out of the coffin, and kissed the tears from her eyes, leaving her with the words that would stay with her all through her life:
"Little one, who bears up alone with such deep sorrow… Never lose that strength or nobility, even when you grow up."
He left one other thing with her-a signet ring, with a rose-shaped crest on it, which he said would lead her to him some day. It was eight years later, still carrying the ring, that Utena first came to Ohtori Academy, a prestigious private school in Melior surrounded by a host of strange traditions. Her determination and strength drew admirers to her even early on; likewise, her insistence on wearing a male uniform made her stand out, and not always in good ways.
That was where Utena met Anthy, the Rose Bride, a girl as different from her outspoken, straightforward nature as the night from the day. Utena challenged Saionji, Anthy's master at the time, for hurting one of her friends' feelings. However, on reaching the dueling arena and seeing the way he abused Anthy, her purpose in fighting changed. She had been told just enough about the duels to know that if Saionji was no longer the champion, Anthy would no longer be subject to his will; therefore, not knowing the rules of the game, she went up against a trained fighter with a magic sword, with only her instincts and a light wooden practice sword…and won.
But freeing Anthy wasn't going to be so easy. Utena was now a part of the duelists' world, and Anthy's new master. She was moved to a new dorm, with Anthy as her roommate, and try though she might to make friends with Anthy and encourage her to fight her bleak destiny, it was slow going, and it's difficult to say how much of the change that was achieved was just Anthy reacting to how Utena-her master-wanted her to be.
Keeping Anthy out of the hands of the more exploitative members of the Student Council was also a struggle-one Utena didn't want anything to do with, at first, but she came to accept the fights she had to go through to keep her friend safe. She used the Sword of Dios, the magical sword sleeping inside of Anthy, to defeat all those who tried to take her away. Gradually, the two became closer. Her relationships with other people at the school also developed…even as they drew nearer and nearer to the end, the duel called Revolution.
Despite her feelings for Akio-the Prince who saved her all those years ago-Utena entered into the duel against him, bent on freeing Anthy no matter what it took. The time of that duel is something she can only remember in flashes: Utena was winning, and then there was a sword in her back, driven home by Anthy. She remembers watching Anthy pierced by swords too many in number to think of counting, even as she begged Akio to spare Anthy…and the Rose Gate. He was trying to open it with the Sword…Then Utena, wounded, bleeding, dying, but not defeated, never defeated, dragged herself to the Gate and pulled it open with her bare hands.
And there was Anthy. Lying in a coffin, and begging her not to help. But Utena couldn't give up, not after going so far-not when her friend was in danger.
She held out her hand.
And Anthy took it.
And then pain, weakness, the world shattering around them…
Then darkness. A long, long darkness, with only her own thoughts for company…Until one day, she opened her eyes and there was a whole world outside. Amid the noise of the Long Night celebrations, the brave prince awoke to the world and set out once again, not knowing for certain what had become of Anthy or Akio but knowing she had to find out.
SAMPLES-
Third Person (roleplay):
She remembered the dueling arena, like a dream each time she saw it, a vision created by the very people it kept inside of it. Roses, roses everywhere-on the buildings, on her ring, sticking out of breast pockets. The castle in the sky, shining, shining, as bright as the place she was trapped in was dark.
Hour after endless hour, she forced herself to keep remembering, because if she didn't, she might start to think her whole life had been just a dream. So she clutched the little details tightly-places, images, names, faces, lives, stories, everything she could think of having seen, having heard, having felt.
Places-white stone and endless staircases, empty mansions, a room full of stars, classrooms and gardens and the forest behind the school. Images-butterflies, picture frames, a bright red carriage, silhouettes, swords, the gate, a broken locket, flower-filled coffins.
A smiling face, a laughing face, arms that wound around her and a voice that always seemed to sing-Wakaba. A face full of energy and confidence, but quick to turn cruel, jealous--Nanami. A gentle face, innocent and soft, with a quick mind behind it-Miki. A face as beautiful as a statue in a museum and just as cold, soft lips that spoke harsh words, caution and control and barely-restrained despair-Juri. A face twisted in anger and jealousy, then softened as it came to know pain, hands that caressed one moment and struck the next, sharp eyes-Saionji. A handsome face, that moved from kind to smug to shocked at a moment's notice, but seemed mostly set on smug, a voice like silk, an incredible will, ambition, nobility, secrets-Touga.
Knowing eyes, skillful hands, persuasive words, beauty, treachery, the prince, the morning star-Akio.
A face and a name that meant something different to everyone who knew them. To Utena… Lost things found again, friendship, pain, betrayal, acceptance, growth, something precious.
Anthy.
Where was Anthy?
She asked the darkness, but the darkness didn't answer. After so long a time, she hadn't expected it to.
But if it wasn't going to give her answers…well, she was going to have to find them somewhere.
Somewhere, somewhere distant, there was a sliver of light.
Utena moved towards it.
The next darkness was a different sort, a thick, dreamless sleep; it didn't last nearly as long as the first. Sounds pierced the shroud: music, shouting children, the excited cheering of a crowd somewhere to her right. Utena opened her eyes, then pushed herself up off of the ground, looking around.
"An alley…?" This place didn't look like Ohtori at all…
Well. First things first... she supposed she'd have to find out where on Reial she was before she did anything else.
First Person (journal):
To: All ships in the Colvus area
My name is Utena Tenjou, and I'm looking for work. If there's room on any of your ships, I'd be glad to help out-I can pull my own weight doing just about anything that needs done.
[Private to Self | Hackable]
I sure hope Anthy's all right…but if I wound up all the way over here, there's no telling where she might be! The ring is still here, and the scars…they're real, too, so I can't have dreamed it all…
I'll find her. Wherever she is, I'll make sure she's safe! If no leads turn up around here, I guess I could go to Boston in the fall...
This post can also be used for concrit! I'll turn anon and screening on, but it'd rock if we could like...be civil about it ♥
