Rosemary Sutcliff and Billy Elliot!

When I was a child, one of my favorite writers was Rosemary Sutcliff -- and thinking back I have no idea what a writer of such adult themes was doing in my junior high school library. Anyway, I was thrilled to learn that one of my favorite books from my still-favorite writer is being made into a movie.

I loved that book too (and others of hers) as a kid and just reread it recently after I saw the trailer online.

That probably partially explains how I ended up volunteering on 2 archeology digs in northern England with Earthwatch - excavating a minifortlet off the end of Hadrian's Wall near Solway Bay and a barracks at Arbeia in Southshields near Newcastle on Tyne. And how one of my cats ended up named after the 20th Roman Legion, : )

That's just so supercool! I had no idea you were so archaeologically connected!

Anyone can volunteer for an Earthwatch dig. They are still excavating at Arbeia: http://www.earthwatch.org/europe/exped/bidwell.html

that's quite the interesting opportunity, though with airfare, it would start to add up, I think.....

Still, I've bookmarked that site for later perusal and thought. Thanks!

I never read her books, but am surely familiar with them. I don't recall her books as having adult themes though.

If you're only wanting one to try, I would recommend "Knight's Fee." Do you have them in your library?

Also, by "adult themes" I don't mean sex. I mean adult themes: What does it mean to take a vow? What does honor mean? What does brotherhood mean? What does country mean? What does home mean? What does fealty mean?

I had them in my YA collection when I was in the public library, but I never bothered when I came to this school. i don't see it as a high interest title...

I loved Rosemary Sutcliffe's books, school had a mobile library van that used to visit periodically, then the village - I come from Welsh sticks - got a library. I searched for her, Malcolm Saville and Andre Norton.
