it happens to mom's too! And it's not when you're young... not really... But once you hit the point where your childhood make friends stage is done and the opinion of your peers matters, this gene, it's called the Embarassyo Gene or "Embarass You" Gene... My dad was phoning the government department who pay my parents their pension yesterday, and he stops talking for a moment and says to mom "What's the date of our marraige?". He then relayed the info to the telephone operator, and said to mom "They want to speak to you". Mom took the phone and the operator said to her "Hit your husband with a rolled up newspaper!"
