NYC : The Ticketmaster of American Cities

I thought I'd like nyc more than I actually did. Overall it was just like Chicago, only concentrated 100 times more in a small space, and with lots of media coverage to give the city an impression of being famous ( Read more... )

Well, there's that thing John Lennon said:

"If I'd lived in Roman times, I'd have lived in
Rome. Where else? Today, America is the Roman Empire, and New York is Rome itself."

Also, I think people are surprisingly rude to strangers in NYC because there are so many strangers trying to pull something. You only have to get hustled a few times before you start treating anyone you don't know as if they might be trying to take advantage of you.

So, it's not actual ill will, it's just a survival strategy.

Then again, I haven't really lived there, so maybe I'm wrong.

It makes sense that John Lennon lived there cuz he was rich *and* famous. It's not like he was a struggling musician trying to get a record deal or anything.

I can see how people need to be guarded in big cities too, but these people who worked for big name establishments and theaters seemed to go over the top. I was there once before for a few days and then and now the average person on the street was pretty decent. I was stopped several times by people looking for directions, which was kind of funny. The average person I'd meet on the street or in diners or restaurants was nice. Even the toll booth worker who took my money even though I accidently drove into an EZ-PASS lane was funny and nice.

So it's a nice place to visit, but when I think of living there and the scummy landlords that necessitate rent strikes and other really unpleasant things that tend to happen there more often than in other places, it makes me hesitate to move there myself.
