But I think, in some ways, both of their philosophies are born of selfishness. Stefan (maybe unconsciously) selfishly wants to maintain Elena's good opinion of him once he has it, he wants to be who she sees him as, the selfless hero, the boyfriend who respects her agency, etc, he wants to be the person who "does the right thing." And Damon wants her alive, even if she's miserable because of it.
WORD TO YOUR MOTHER. Why oh why can't fandom see this plain fact.
Aaand Damon gets his neck snapped. It's kinda fitting that Alaric finally gets to do it, even if it's not really Alaric.
Haha, didn't Alaric snap Damon's neck in the last episode too? At the school? I like it, it's a nice touch. ;)
The difference is that Damon KNOWS he's being selfish. Damon acknowledges that he's being selfish. Damon flat-out knows that Elena will hate him, but admits freely that it's more important that she's alive to hate him. Stefan cloaks his actions in feminisistic-agency-giving, selflessness. That's what bothers me. It's Stefan once again creating his own reality of what is right and what is wrong according to the gospel of Stefan and acting self-righteous about his choice of following that reality of his right.
I do love Stefan, I just wish his horrible actions and selfishness would be addressed/acknowledged on the show. All of Damon's faults and flaws are all the time (mostly BY Damon). Stefan? A hero? Give me a frickin' break. No, he most emphatically is not, but he (and the show -- at this point) positions him as one.

I agree, but I kind of love that about him. Stefan fascinates me in all his identity-constructing lying-to-himself glory. He's so fucked up, and I think the show does deconstruct him as hero, just maybe not as blatantly as we'd like.

Again, I agree, and I think a few characters acknowledging this on the show would go a long way towards rectifying this for me. I think the writers address it occasionally, but very subtly and very briefly. I WANT MORE.
Elena didn't love overwhelmed at all to me. Her face after Damon kissed her in 3.10? That was Elena overwhelmed. This was Elena underwhelmed by the long-awaited kiss from Stefan. Which yes, was COMPLETELY unearned.
distant_autumn said that Elena's reaction in that scene reminded her strongly of Damon telling her in 3.02 that when Stefan was back from the brink, he wanted Elena to remember everything she felt for Damon. That was how she saw Elena's reaction to Stefan's kiss and I agree. It was so similar in style to the 3.10 kiss, and Elena's reaction was definitely different, and, yeah, I can completely buy that she was thinking of Damon, and what she feels for him in that moment ... especially in comparison to Stefan.
I meant Elena was overwhelmed by the entire situation (the CHOICE, the danger they were all in, etc), not necessarily Stefan's kiss. Stefan's kiss just added to everything else.
I actually couldn't read her reaction to Stefan's kiss at all, beyond what I said, confusion and her general state of being overwhelmed that Stefan just added to.
I mostly just wanted everyone to give the girl a break. Let her sleep! No choice-making needs to be had right now! Or at all! Elena just needed a nap. Maybe some ice cream.

And yeah, the Salvatores definitely each practice their own brand of selfishness. But that's the fun! I love these flawed babies.
