Techie question

Sep 24, 2006 10:45

Hallo, beautiful flist :D

Quick question for you. My computer has had McAfee virus protection on it for the last two years, and it's expiring now. I don't know much about these things-- Is McAfee a good virus protection device, or would y'all who know more about computers than I recommend something different?

Thanks for any and all advice! <3

Thanks for the advice! I'm trying out this AVG now, and it seems to be going all right. Spybot blew my mind with the amount of stuff it found and got rid of!

I've heard both good and bad about McAfee. I had Norton for a long time, but between the cost and various problems it seemed to cause my system, I've switched to AVG, which is a free av program. It seems to work fine; there's the occasional glitch, but nowhere near the problems I had with Norton.

The main thing is, in addition to av, make sure you have a firewall. Sygate used to have a free one, but Symantec (Norton) bought them out and did away with it, though, you might still find a copy somewhere if you look for it. There are other free ones out there, as well.

Also, spyware software is a must these days. Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Spyware Blaster are three popular (and free) programs - and I think you can find them all at download.com. I have all three on my computer. The first two scan your system (they seem to work well as a pair, so if one misses something the other usually catches it) and Blaster helps keep the stuff from getting in in the first place.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I've had issues with Macafee, and so now I've downloaded AVG. I'll take your advice about a firewall, too!

mcafee is kind of outdated. it's also popular, so hackers try harder to make viruses that can crack through it. i suggest e-trust security suite.

I have always liked AVG, and it's FREE.

F-secure will always be my favourite. When I worked as a computer tech, people brought in computers with McAffee, Norton and the like, and I would always take those off and put F-secure on. It would find the virus that the others had been missing with no problems. But yes, you should be able to get it for free if you want it and if for some reason you don't seem to be able to, I can tell you how. ♥
