In Character Information
character name: Ryou Bakura
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh!
Timeline: End of the original series, after the Pharaoh passes on into the afterlife
character's age: 17
powers, skills, pets and equipment: Shadow powers; able to summon monsters/abilities from his deck of cards. How powerful a card is determines how much of his energy is consumed when summoning it.
Notable cards:
Change of Heart: Able to take control of a single monster/dangerous animal for a short period of time.
Special effect: Able to cast the spell upon himself. At minimum power, it uses up as much energy as summoning one strong monster would and grants him the
mismatched wings capable of flight. Max power takes up nearly all of his energy and gives him the ability to control a small group of creatures for a slightly extended period of time. Exact number/time determined by how powerful they are. The stronger the creatures, the fewer can be controlled and for less amount of time. He is unable to summon any other cards for twenty-four hours after using the max power of this card.
Dark Necrofear: Monster can only be summoned if three fiend monsters have already been summoned and destroyed. A last resort card, it has strong offense and stronger defense to use at his will. If it is destroyed, it takes control of whatever destroyed it. When in possession of another creature, it's drains Ryou's energy at a rapid pace until it's either called back or he loses consciousness from all of his energy being drained. Takes anywhere from eighteen to thirty hours for energy to be recharged, depending on how much was used. A full forty-eight if he passed out from the draining.
Lady of Faith: A weak monster, though able to send out soothing wavelengths to those who hear her spell.
The Dark Door: Used in the case of ambushes. Once activated, creates a barrier like 'door' that only allows a single enemy to get through. Though at the same time, only a single one of Ryou's own monsters can get to the enemy. The door continues to drain Ryou's energy gradually until he deactivates it.
Spirit Shield: Allows him to summon the spirit of one of his previously fallen monsters to act as a temporary shield. The shield stays active until he turns it off, moderately draining his energy as long as it's out.
Mystical Space Typhoon: Allows him to negate a single hostile magic spell.
Red Medicine: Recharges 20% of his energy when consumed. After about an hour, there's the crash and he loses 25% of his energy.
Alter for Tribute: Sacrifice one summoned monster and he regains the energy it took to summon it.
Call of the Haunted: Resurrects a single recently fallen monster at 1.5% cost energy it originally took to summon it.
Monster Reborn: Resurrects a single recently fallen monster at half the energy cost it originally took to summon it.
Premature Burial: Resurrects a single recently fallen monster at the cost of 10% his total energy.
Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell: At the cost of one of his own powerful spell cards, he can summon this barrier to use as a shield against hostile spells. It moderately drains his energy after the first three minutes of activation.
Droll Bird: A monster able to temporarily stun enemies with it's ear-piercing wails.
Earthbound Spirit: A defensive monster that drags any foe who gets close to him down into the ground.
LaLa Li-Oon: A weak monster that can send out a small burst of acid rain.
Dragon Zombie: A moderate strength monster with highly corrosive breath.
The Gross Ghost of Fled Dreams: A monster able to gradually drain a sleeping foe of their energy.
Spirit Illusion: Creates a temporary illusion of a currently summoned monster.
Mirror Force: Bounces back any negative spell at twice the power.
Magic Cylinder: Bounces back any negative spell.
All other cards are simply monster cards with no special abilities or powers other than their own attack and defense.
Notes: Ryou will not be able to use many cards at first. He'll just barely be starting out and won't have enough energy to use too many at once. His energy capacity will slowly grow over time as he gets used to his new abilities. Also despite having his decks on him, a large majority of his cards or their effects will be completely useless as they're too specific towards Duel Monsters game itself, thus only the useful ones he'll discover are listed here.
Also, the cards are not immediately reusable. Once a card is activated, it has a recharge period of a couple to a few hours, depending on the card. The only exceptions to that being the monster cards that can be risen from the dead by one of the three resurrection spells. If a monster dies, it's recharge time is 24 hours unless resurrected by those means.
canon history: Ryou's father gave him the Millennium Ring, unknowing of it's powers. His dad always away on digs in Egypt, Ryou had a wish that he could play games with his friends forever. But any friends he got kept falling into comas, causing him to transfer schools often and is how he ends up in the same school as Yugi and the others. It's later when he discovers the sharp ends of his Ring digging into his chest and hears his dark half for the first time and how Ryou finds out that all the people falling into comas was the dark one sealing their souls into the game pieces so they could play with him forever. He not only did this with Ryou's friends, but also anyone who bullied him as well, referring to the 'kind' acts as paying his rent.
Ryou's main goal from then on is to fight back his dark side and help his friends whenever the other tries to use his body to harm them in any way. Most of the time he's suppressed so he can't interfere but at crucial points he's able to regain some control and help Yami Yugi get an advantage, even at the cost of his own safety and life. He accompanies Yugi and the others to Duelist Kingdom, mostly just playing a supporting role and watching the others during that time. He stayed with them until Yugi defeated Pegasus, at which point he was once again suppressed by his dark side for a while.
During Battle City, Ryou is once again used and abused by his dark side who stabs him in the arm as part of a plan with Malik to get Yugi's trust. Ryou himself doesn't know how he got injured, only that Malik was there to help him. Despite the fact that he should have been in the hospital, he's once again taken over by his dark side who gets himself the qualifications to enter the finals. Ryou isn't directly in control of his own body again until Malik orders Yami Bakura to let Ryou back in control to weaken Yugi. Being weaker than his dark half, he's still in great pain from the stab wound and Yugi's attack would have caused critical injury. Though in a rare show of concern his dark side takes over for him after only a short while of watching him in pain, refusing to risk his life as he claims to still need his host and is willing to sacrifice the duel instead. Ryou's in a coma, hinted later at being in the Shadow Realm, until the end of the tournament where his Millennium Ring is given to Yugi.
Even without the ring, Yami Bakura manages to still control him to some degree as he takes the Millennium Ring back from two idiots who accidentally stole the Yugi's Items while trying to get his Egyptian God Cards. Ryou goes with Yugi and the others later to the museum, but is told he's not allowed to enter the Memory World with the others because he has a dark evil surrounding him. He runs out crying and his dark side once again suppresses him and just goes himself to take care of things, saying he doesn't need his host anymore anyways. He's last seen as himself watching the final battle between Yugi and Atem after his own dark side has already been destroyed.
personality: All in all, Ryou really is a kind and sweet boy. He's quiet, shy and polite at the best of times and of course always very proper with people and using honorifics for just about everyone. At first he seems like a complete push over as even some of the teachers pick on him for his long hair and girly appearance, but he shows he's much stronger than he looks. They say first impressions are everything and almost everyone's first impression of Ryou is of course just what they see. In actuality, Ryou's a very good actor and can easily hide his real emotions with little effort.
He's very lonely most of the time, his mother and sister being dead and his father always away on digs and things for work. He even goes as far as sitting alone in his room at night and writing letters to his dead little sister as if she could read them from Heaven. Though that also hints at another aspect he usually keeps hidden unless someone really knows him. Ryou loves the occult, even going as far as building up his dueling decks around the theme with fiends and zombies, one of his decks even being built specifically to be used in tarot readings as well as dueling. And there he shows he's two sides that don't normally come together. When people see an easily bullied and quiet young boy they wouldn't assume he gets very cheery and excited with the concepts of zombies and ghosts, naturally assuming that people like that are scared of those things. But Ryou even seems to take delight when he tells others about his deck and they get creeped out by it, he smiles sweetly and pipes up in an overly cheerful manner about his cards.
Despite his shyness though, Ryou is very cheerful and open when he actually does make friends. If not a little hesitant because he's so used to his friends mysteriously falling into comas. When it's discovered why that's happening though, Ryou proves to be much stronger than he appears and actively does everything in his power to help his friends, showing him as a very caring individual who puts others lives before his own. Even at the cost of sacrificing himself during the RPG game and even after his dark side impaled his hand to get him to back off, he still went to any lengths possible to help Yami Yugi win the game and save his friends.
Though having a weak mind as he's subdued so easily most of the time, Ryou never goes down without a fight and his determination keeps him trying to fight off his darkness as much as he can. Sometimes it turns out for the best in the most critical moments, but other times he's not strong enough and completely blacks out. Though whenever he wakes up, even if he's just coming from the Shadow Realm which is supposed to be full of nightmarish creatures, he's still just as perky and optimistic as ever and seemingly okay. That could have some connection to the fact that he does have such a strong love for the occult and therefore wouldn't be bothered by creatures of evil or it's part of his ability to act like everything's okay no matter what and hide his inner feelings. Either way, even after Battle City when they run to check on him he's happily eating food like he wasn't just in a darkness induced coma with an open wound in his arm.
But despite how dangerous it is, Ryou doesn't try to get rid of his Ring on his own. Not out of fear of his dark sides wrath though, as it's proven several times he feels strong enough to stand up to him when need be, but more because it was a gift from his father who's never around. And even an evil presence, it's still a small feeling of someone being there with him so he's not completely alone. As much as he cares about his friends more than his own life, he's also distanced from them and usually not included in a lot of the things they do, being the quiet one in the background left behind. Even when they all go to the museum together and he wants to help them get the Pharaoh's memories back, he's denied because of the 'evil' around him and the rejection of being left out hurts him enough to make him cry, reminding him that he's different from them and doesn't fit in. Even after all that, he's once again with them in the final duel between Yugi and the Pharaoh, never holding anything against them and still being kind despite how much he was used as a tool by his dark side and untrusted by his friends. He's understanding in the fact that they had every right to be cautious of him because of the spirit of the Ring and doesn't blame them for it.
why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting? Ryou's always been into the occult and had to live with an evil spirit possessing his body to hurt his friends and others around him. He has a number of scars on him that were inflicted from the spirit and his mind has been sent to the Shadow Realm on a few occasions. Monsters are nothing new to him.

Network Post Sample: Um... H-hello?
[The voice is soft and hesitant, almost a bit nervous if judging from the slight sounds of fidgeting on the end of the line.]
This seems a little ridiculous but I suppose there's not much other choice. I'm a little confused and... I was wondering if anyone could assist me? I ran into someone outside but they didn't seem too... friendly.
[A short pause as he's trying to figure out just where he's going with this. He never was good at public speaking, especially when he doesn't even know exactly who he's trying to speak to.]
This city... It's not like any place I've seen before. At least, not outside of books and movies. If there's anyone who can tell me just how I got here and where exactly here is, I'd be more than grateful.
[Another pause where there's intelligible mumbling for a moment before he speaks up again.]
Thank you in advance.
Third Person Sample: Pain. That was the first thing that registered in the boy's mind as he let out a soft groan and slowly forced himself to sit up, a hand coming to press against his forehead. He tried to open his eyes, only to close them again against the light coming in from the window. No, this was not a something new to him. Waking up feeling disoriented and out of place, presumably in a strange location. The story of his life as it were the passed few years. His head absentmindedly went to his chest out of habit, where once rested his precious Millennium Ring-
It's when his hand touched nothing but the fabric of his shirt that he snapped to attention. No, it was impossible. He was gone, defeated finally once and for all by the Pharaoh. The Items had been lost after that, laid to rest with Atem. His darkness was no longer there, no longer with him to cause him such pain and annoyances as this. So then how...
Ryou finally pushed his legs over the side of the bed to sit up and take in his surroundings, caution high but curiosity lingering there as well. Just what was this place and how did he get there? If it wasn't the Items and didn't have anything to do with his former darkness, then how did he not remember anything about how he arrived? Had his other self somehow found a way to get to him even without the use of the Ring? He wouldn't put it passed him honestly, it wouldn't be the first time it happened either. But something told him that wasn't the case this time, that it was something else. Something that had nothing to do with every insane thing that had quickly become a normality in his life before.
He stood from the bed, walking over to the window in the room to try and get some idea of just what was going on. What he saw caused his eyes to widen a fraction, even reaching up to rub at them for a minute before pushing the window open and looking out. He definitely wasn't in Egypt any longer, or even Japan for that matter. For a few more minutes he simply stood there and took in the sight, trying to place exactly where he could be and coming up with absolutely nothing. He stayed calm though, knowing that panicking in a situation like this wasn't going to do any good. Besides, it's not like it's the worst thing that's ever happened to him before.
Once he was sure he wasn't getting anywhere by simply standing there and staring he turned his attentions back to examine the room he had woken up in and also check himself over. The Ring wasn't there obviously, something he had expected once his mind was fully awake, and it never would be again. His pockets were the same as well, not a single thing missing or stolen. His wallet was still there with the small bit of money he had on him, along with his school ID and library card. His deck seemed to be in one piece as well, not even taken out of the carrying box he kept them safe in. Nothing stolen, that was a good thing at least.
His hand lingered over his deck for a few seconds longer than intended. A faint power there, a dark pull. That same feeling he could vaguely recall from his times spent in the Shadow Realm and the feel of the Ring resting against his skin when hidden under his shirt. He shook it off as simply his imagination, fully aware the cards no longer held any special power after the Items were lost. The Shadow Realm was no longer his concern, and neither were the dark powers that came with it. Pulling himself away from his own thoughts Ryou decided that nothing would come of sitting around confused so he made his way to the door with the intention of doing some exploring outside.
Anything else? I believe that's it. ^^; Just let me know if there's something that needs to be specified/changed with his abilities.
