Well, for a while now, my professors have told me that I have to see the movie Sicko by Michael Moore.  I was a bit skeptical at first.  I saw Fareinheit 911 when it came out.  While there was a lot of things that I agreed with, it was not hard to see that it was a very skewed movie.  I don't think it's fair for anyone to take facts and skew them ( Read more... )

Welcome to the Disillusioned Americans Club. I have felt the same way for quite a while and I still don't know what to do or how to change things. Sadly, other countries are following the USA's lead.

The only thing I CAN do something about, other than vote, is what I do to the environment. So until I find a way to change the government, I work on reducing my impact on the environment. It might sound stupid, but that is the one thing I can do while I think.

And even voting is hard because it's tough to choose the lesser of evils.

p.s. There's NOTHING un-American about voicing your disappointment in a government that is self-serving. That's how we became an independent nation, after all. Contrary to what the government says, wanting the country to take care of its own has nothing to do with terrorism or being unpatriotic.

The founding fathers would be so disappointed to see what they worked so hard to obtain go so awry. The philosophies they based our founding documents on are in stark contradiction with current governmental operations and policies. They were all about helping our fellow citizens and promoting a society in which everyone had rights and duties, one of which was to make sure the government was not corrupt.

If you have an accident of any kind in New Zealand (car crash or trip and break your arm), it's covered by the national accident compensation scheme (ACC). Here's a link to explain what they do:

Maintenance visits to drs you have to pay yourself. There is private health ins for that, but it's costly with little return unless you get it through your job.
