Prompt: An AU where Astraea stayed dead Universe: The Boolpropian Round Robin Legacy: Generation Eight Word Count: 791 Notes: Obviously, AU, but does include some of the Astraea-related stuff that went on in Generation Nine.
Astraea's not so good at staying dead. :P I think this is an interesting AU, because it's so far away from canon--Roxanna has a goal at this point in her life, and Astraea is much less lost to her.
Nope, Astraea is definitely not good at staying dead. It's a strange AU, because, I mean...Astraea's dead, which is worse than being alive, but she can interact with Roxanna, which is making both of them happy, but happy isn't necessarily good - as I was writing this I realized that Astraea NOT being there (and in the case of Roxanna that meant she had to be alive but inaccessible rather than dead) was probably actually good for Roxanna. Because the thing is, they're almost too close as twins in some ways, and Roxanna especially is dependent on Astraea. Forcing that separation was ultimately good for both of them, I think, even if it hurt while it was happening. So it's really a contradiction, either way.
I think it's good in the short term, not so good in the long run - Roxanna grew a lot by having to depend on only herself in a way that she wouldn't in a universe where she could just fall back on following Astraea, and Astraea had to figure herself out as well. So it's both sweet but also ultimately probably not healthy for either of them.
AKA an AU where Astraea stayed dead but NOT FOR LONG :P I'm glad to see at least one piece where Roxanna gets to have a plan and let that help her keep going, anyway.
Well, when I thought about it, Astraea being permanently dead really wouldn't have changed anything other than Roxanna's suspicions about one of her kids maybe having powers until the very end. At which point, yes, I could have written a very depressing fic about completely insane vampire Roxanna, but I have enough depressing prompts already.
So instead I went with stays dead in the temporary sense, because it was more of an actual change. It was interesting, because while this outcome is definitely better in the short term - Roxanna wouldn't be nearly as broken - I think it's actually NOT better in the long term. Because without having to grow up, figure out who she is without Astraea or even Seren and Ma'or, learn to be her own person and to handle life on her own - without all that, Roxanna would have broken when Lily was killed. And frankly I think the separation probably helped Astraea too, but neither of them is objective enough to see that.
