Sim City High was big.
Not that the elementary school he'd gone to was all that small, but there were six elementary schools that fed into Sim City High, so there were a lot of students here.
And Grey had to admit that he really honestly felt a little lost.
Oh, he knew a few people in his classes, kids he'd grown up with and whatnot, but somehow he'd ended up with a completely different schedule from everyone he was really friendly with. He even had a different lunch hour from most of them.
So there he was, standing at the end of the lunch line holding his tray, completely unsure where to sit.
And of course, because it was already that sort of day, the girl who'd been behind him in line managed to almost bump into him with her tray.
"Sorry, sorry, I should've moved farther out of the way," he said, quickly doing so.
"It's cool, I didn't drop anything," she said, smiling at him. "I'm Joyce, by the way."
"Grey."
"So, Grey, do you have somewhere to sit? Or are you gonna stand here until someone actually does trip over you? I mean, I gotta admit, the turkey surprise might do better as a floor cleaner than as food, but I'm pretty sure you don't want someone spilling that on your clothes."
Grey shook his head. "Yeah, no, I think I'll skip that, thanks. And no, nowhere to sit." He shrugged. "Everyone I know seems to have lunch 4th or 6th, not 5th."
"Ugh, 4th, I would not want to be eating lunch at 10:30."
"Yeah, 11:20 is much better, except for the part where none of my friends have it." Did he sound maudlin? He probably sounded maudlin. But considering everything that had happened the night before, he thought he had a right to not be super happy.
"Well, now you have me," Joyce said cheerfully. "I'm supposed to meet my friends somewhere on the right - you want to come sit with us?"
He thought about it for a moment. "Sure," he said finally, "why not?"
Grey followed Joyce to a set of tables where they joined another girl and boy, who Joyce introduced as Genevieve and Dexter. "This is Grey - what'd you say your last name was?"
"I didn't. It's Doran." He placed his tray on the table and sat down next to Dexter, completely missing the look the other three exchanged. "So you guys already know each other?"
"We went to elementary together, yeah," Dexter said. "Uptown. Which were you at?"
"Downtown for me."
Genevieve nodded. "Cool. So, tell us all about yourself, Grey Doran. What do you like? Do you have hobbies? What are your parents like? Are you the oldest or the youngest or somewhere in the middle?"
"Oldest, I have three little sisters. As for hobbies, well..."
The four of them spent the rest of the lunch period talking about their lives while picking at the turkey surprise. Grey talked more than any of the other three, but they already knew each other and he was essentially the new kid, so it made sense. He still felt like he got to know them pretty well.
Five minutes before the bell, Joyce looked at her watch and then at the others. "So who has to be where for 6th?"
Grey pulled out his schedule and saw that Dexter and Genevieve were doing the same. "I've got math next. Mr. Curious, Room 308."
"Oh hey, me too," Dexter said. "Awesome."
Grey smiled. "It'll be nice to know someone in one of my classes."
Joyce grabbed his schedule and put it on the table between hers and Genevieve's. "Looks like you've got history with me during 8th, and, hey, you and Genevieve had English together 3rd."
Grey thought about that for a second. "You were sitting on the left side?" he asked Genevieve. "I was on the right."
Genevieve nodded. "Yeah. We'll have to sit together tomorrow."
"We will."
Joyce stood up, picking up her tray. "Well, I gotta run, the science labs are pretty far from here and I've got bio next. Why don't we all meet up after school? We can hang out."
Grey stood too. "If you don't mind coming to my house. We're pretty nearby, but I need to be available in case Mom needs help with my sisters."
Genevieve and Joyce exchanged a look. "Sure," Genevieve said, "sounds like fun. See you at 2:45 at the front doors?"
"Works for me," Dexter said. "C'mon, Grey, let's get to math. Being late on the first day sounds like a pretty stupid idea."
"Agreed."
As they placed their trays in the carts and headed for the stairs, Grey smiled. The first day hadn't been so bad after all.
